About this listen

At the heart of this tragic history is one of Shakespeare's most noble characters, the statesman Brutus, who is caught in a devastating conflict between private affection and public duty.

Julius Caesar has become the most powerful man in the Rome. Does his power now threaten the very existence of the Republic itself? A conspiracy is hatched, one that will have fatal consequences not only for Caesar and the conspirators but for the future history of the ancient world.

Brutus is played by John Bowe and Mark Antony by Adrian Lester. Michael Feast is Caesar.

I don't know why...

...some folks bag on this play. Shakespeare's Julius Caesar is a powerful meditation on political leadership. This performance is also very strong.

Great in every way

Fantastic performances. Thought I recognize one of the guys from Game of Thrones in the cast but not sure. You can't go wrong with these Arcángel additions. In fact BBCand Folger Shakespeare are also both great. Enjoy the Bard.

Wow...

That... was magnificent. Can’t speak highly enough for this cast and production. I am going to work through all Arkangel productions. Thank you.

Riveting!

This was a pleasure to listen to.
I will listen again soon as there is always something more in Shakespeare to grab with every new hearing.

wonderful performance!

Arkangel performances are just our favorite for listening to Shakespeare, and this one did not disappoint. Antony was so well-played!

Excellent Tool for the Classroom

My students really struggle with Shakespeare. They find his style antiquated and don't even try to understand the story. This dramatic audio book with its sound effects really gets them interested and helps them understand. The different voices for each character, and the fact that they are speaking their lines fluently (as opposed to casting parts in the classroom and having students read, stumbling through the words) really help students in focusing more on the story and less on the unfamiliarity of the words.

That said, I think Julius Caesar is one of my favorite of Shakespeare's plays. The allegory for politics at that time in England, and our present day politics is wonderful and I love the puns. Calphurnia's manipulation of Julius Caesar, Antony's manipulation of the plebeians, and Portia's manipulation of Brutus all with persuasive strategies is excellent. If you're ever curious as to why some people can be persuaded to do things you never thought they were capable of, listen to this and/or read the play- you'll get your answer.

So many deaths

The story was great. It gave me lots of information about Caesar’s later life but there were too many deaths! (Caesar, Brutus etc. died) I counted in total 5 deaths. I know that this is true but I don’t like so many deaths!
