About this listen

“An excellent small group study.” – Rev. Travis Knoll

In a time of upheaval in the largest denomination of the Methodist movement, this classic explanation and defense of Methodist Christianity by its founder is required reading. Pastor David Wentz has updated Wesley’s 18th-century language, deleted references to no-longer-relevant theological disputes, and added an introduction that sets the work in context. The result is a clear, easy to read text that is enjoyable and understandable for modern readers of all levels of theological interest and expertise.

This short book is ideal for small groups and adult Sunday School classes as well as individual reading. Dr. Wentz has included thoughtful discussion questions at the end of each section, a brief guide on how to lead small groups, and a suggested six-week schedule. For further study, Wesley’s numerous Scripture quotes and allusions are identified, with the Biblical text cited and quoted in footnotes. Wesley’s full original version is included as an appendix.

No matter where one stands in the wide umbrella of worldwide Methodism, this accessible summary of its root emphases provides a vital foundation.

“I am planning to use my copy for a Confirmation class for adults and youth! I'll purchase some extra copies.” – Rev. Barbara Boyd Mayo

“So timely and so needed! Thank you for providing this valuable resource at a critical time for the Methodist Church.” – Nancy Plaxico

I appreciate that the author took on the task of producing the classic works of Wesley for the modern reader.

I enjoyed hearing more about Methodism from the founder. it provided a much better understanding of the tenets of the denomination.

Incredibly concise and well-written

Great book from a great man. It uses auto-generated voice, so the performance wasn’t anything special, but it did the job.

Easy to hear and understand on what it is to be a Methodist

I liked the message this book gave of what Methodist is. It was easy to understand. I could not tell it was a virtual voice performance.
