About this listen

Fonda Lee returns to the acclaimed Green Bone Saga with four prequel short stories that delve into the personal histories of the Kaul and Ayt families.

The Witch and Her Friend. Before she was the ruthless leader of the Mountain clan, Ayt Mada was an orphan without friends at school except for one: Aun Ure, a teenage girl feared and renowned as an assassin but yearning for a simpler life.

Not Only Blood. Before he was the heir apparent of the No Peak clan, Kaul Lan challenged his grandfather and clan patriarch to help a boy who had lost everything.

Better Than Jade. Before they were married, Kaul Hilo and Maik Wen were a young couple facing long odds: the son of a top Green Bone clan in love with a stone-eye girl from a disreputable family.

Granddaughter Cormorant. Before she left and returned to Kekon, Kaul Shae was the apple of her grandfather’s eye…as well as a daring secret informer to a foreign country. Contains an introduction and story notes by the author.

Makes me miss the series and want to read them again. Nice to hear about some events in their lives that happened before the trilogy. Great narrator as usual.

Love these little prequels

I loved getting to see these characters again. Getting some of their background was a lot of fun. There are so many good characters in the series. The narrator was really good. I love that it was the same person from the rest of the books.

Great prequel stories

It's an absolute treat to be back in Janloon. I did not realize how much I missed this world till I listened to this. In fact I'm inspired to start the trilogy again after reading this. The performance by Andrew Kishino is fantastic as always. Kishino has become one of my top three favorite narrators because of these books. And the notes from Fonda Lee at the end of each short story add so much, especially as an aspiring wroter who looks up to Fonda Lee as an author. If you love these books, this is absolutely for you.

no notes, each story as poignant as the larger novels that started green bone saga. ends on an empowering and almost self reflective note

Still can’t get enough of these characters. I am very grateful that Fonda Lee gave us these short stories.

I still want more

Stories that fans of the series will enjoy if they just want a little more Green Bones. Nothing essential but one of the stories is really good. Don’t listen to the author’s notes after each story unless you have read the original series. Lots of spoilers in those. The short stories probably won’t make a lot of sense if you haven’t read the series.

One great story, one good, two decent

Delighted to learn more about the wonderful characters that made me fall in love with this trilogy.

This collection of shorts doesn’t stand alone. New listeners thinking about diving into the series would be better served getting The Jadesetters of Janloon, a novella with plot, action, and prominent use of Jade.

These also aren’t so much stories as they’re supplements giving us a little more backstory on the
MCs from the series. There’s not much action or plot, little detail on the Kaul-crime system, and zero explanation of the magical Jade. I’m not sure this added much value, especially because you really need to listen to the trilogy (or at least book 1) first in order to understand these shorts.
And once you’ve heard the full length books, these shorts are redundant.

Listen to these prequels only after the series
