About this listen

The end of their world begins with a story.

This one.

In most fairy tales, princesses are beautiful, dragons are terrifying, and stories are harmless. This isn't most fairy tales.

Princess Violet is plain, reckless, and quite possibly too clever for her own good. Particularly when it comes to telling stories. One day she and her best friend, Demetrius, stumble upon a hidden room and find a peculiar book. A forbidden book. It tells a story of an evil being - called the Nybbas - imprisoned in their world. The story cannot be true - not really. But then the whispers start. Violet and Demetrius, along with an ancient, scarred dragon, may hold the key to the Nybbas's triumph...or its demise. It all depends on how they tell the story. After all, stories make their own rules.

Iron Hearted Violet is a story of a princess unlike any other. It is a story of the last dragon in existence, deathly afraid of its own reflection. Above all, it is a story about the power of stories, our belief in them, and how one enchanted tale changed the course of an entire kingdom.

Beloved from beginning to end

Ms. Barnhill has the singular spectacular gift of cultivating hope where there is none. Where there should be none. And yet, she grows hope like magic, imbued against all odds. And, I am grateful.

Love Love Love this author and this narrator!

Kelly Barnhill is amazing. We loved The Girl Who Drank the Moon and we loved this book. Also this narrator is the best! He also narrated The Wonderling- which we also loved- and we were so happy to hear his voice for this book. He does such an excellent job with voices and mood. Our family (9yo and 12yo) listens to audio books almost every weekday night and this one is definitely one we all enjoyed.

Love can make Anyone a Hero

What did you love best about Iron Hearted Violet?

The theme, Love can make anyone a Hero. It is beautifully narrated and written; loved every minute of both reading and listening. I am now purchasing the printed book to give as holiday gifts. This book is sure to be a classic all children (and grandparents :) should read/listen to.

A good tale

This was a good wish fulfillment tale, from the perspective of a cowardly narrator… that got a little bit annoying, but the growth of the two main character kids was worth it.

Magical Adventure

Another magical adventure by Kelly Barnhill and it did not disappoint. I love the strength of female characters and the vulnerability of the males. It's nice to read a story that nonchalantly steers clear of stereotypical gender rolls...and gives you a great plot to boot!

Good story, annoying narrators

I enjoyed the story, but the narrator of the audio book and the narrator character in the book are both annoying: patronizing and verbose. If you can let those go, the underlying story is worth the listen.

Enjoyable for all ages.

A fun fantasy with likable characters. Enjoyable for adults and kids. The narrator brought the story to life and suited the author’s prose.
