創建時は小さな神社だった東照宮は、家康の孫である家光が3代将軍となった時代に、現在のような絢爛な姿になりました。
東照宮のほか、二荒山神社、輪王寺の3つが、「日光の社寺」の名で世界遺産に登録されています。
建造物と自然の調和が、日本古来の神道思想を表している点が重要とされました。
これらの境内に建つ103棟の江戸時代の建造物は、日本の近世宗教建築の代表例です。
