About this listen

Four strangers arrive at the solicitors' office of Puckle, Puckle, and Nunnery. They have never met, and have no idea why they have been invited. But they - along with a missing man - are descendants of the late Algernon George Culver Mayton, the inventor of "Mayton's Marvellous Mixture" and each entitled to a portion of the Mayton Fortune. But before they can split the money, the missing man must be found.

They begin their search, but then Detective Sloan receives a call that one of the legatees had died following an attack of food poisoning. Now detectives Sloan and Crosby must determine whether the deceased merely ingested a noxious substance by accident, or if the legatees are being picked off one-by-one. And when matters of money and family rivalry are involved, there is almost certainly foul play afoot.

Good story - some annoying characters, narrator was perfect with all character actions & voices.

A great new book in a long series!

The characters are still as engaging, and the mystery as clever, as the first C. D. Sloan mystery written over 50 years ago (1966). Catherine Aird (approaching 90) is still writing about the same group of likeable characters who have changed relatively little (Sloan's son was born early in the series, and is still a child). Yet they have continued to live in the current day as the series has continued. In the early books it was blood-types, fingerprints, no computers, and only land line phones. Now there are synthetic drugs, DNA, mobile phones, and other computing devices, but it's still clearly the human failings and the detective's brain and compassion that make this author's books great. She leads you smoothly through all of the twists and turns of the plot, and shows you all of the things that you need to see to solve the mystery, adding in subtle humor along the way. But, more often than not, you are completely suprised at the end.
Please more Catherine Aird! There are around 25 books in this series now, and Audible has less than half of them.

Loved it!!!!!

I picked this series from the “included” listings and I am so glad I did! I needed something new to listen to and of course the last three books I bought were as dull as ditchwater. I am sure I will be listening to each one. It’s a great mystery with some laughter as well. One joke was so funny I almost spit my milk all over the place! Try it. I think you will adore it.😊

Love these books

I love Constable Crosby. He is so goofy and genuine. His character brings the story to life. The relationship between Sloan and his Superior officer never fails to make me smile. The mystery is well plotted. The narrator does a marvelous job.

Not up to previous standards

I found this to be a rambling mishmash of lots of words, not much meaning. The conclusion was not amusing to me, as I was waiting for other information that never arrived. A thorough disappointment but the narration was outstanding, too bad the content was not better.
