Story
In the summer of 1942, the Rabinowitz family narrowly escaped the Nazi ghetto in their Polish town by fleeing to the forbidding Bialowieza Forest. They miraculously survived two years in the woods—through brutal winters, Typhus outbreaks, and merciless Nazi raids—until they were liberated by the Red Army in 1944. After the war, they trekked across the Alps into Italy, where they settled as refugees before eventually immigrating to the United States.

Seventy years ago, Joe Rubinstein walked out of a Nazi concentration camp. Until now, his story has been hidden from the world. Shortly before dawn on a frigid morning in Radom, Poland, 21-year-old Joe answered a knock at the door of the cottage he shared with his widowed mother and siblings. German soldiers forced him onto a crowded open-air truck. Wearing only an undershirt and shorts, Joe was left on the truck with no protection from the cold. By the next morning, several around him would be dead. From there, things got worse for young Joe, much worse.

As a child growing up in North Korea, Hyeonseo Lee was one of millions trapped by a secretive and brutal communist regime. Her home on the border with China gave her some exposure to the world beyond the confines of the Hermit Kingdom and, as the famine of the 1990s struck, she began to wonder, question and realise that she had been brainwashed her entire life. Given the repression, poverty and starvation she witnessed surely her country could not be, as she had been told, 'the best on the planet'?

For eight weeks in 1945, as Berlin fell to the Russian army, a young woman kept a daily record of life in her apartment building and among its residents. The anonymous author depicts her fellow Berliners in all their humanity, as well as their cravenness, corrupted first by hunger and then by the Russians. A Woman in Berlin tells of the complex World War II relationship between civilians and an occupying army and the shameful indignities to which women in a conquered city are always subject—the mass rape suffered by all, regardless of age or infirmity.

Imagine being a 13-year-old girl in love with boys, school, family - life itself. Then suddenly, in a matter of hours, your life is shattered by the arrival of a foreign army. This is the memoir of Elli Friedmann, who was 13 years old in March 1944, when the Nazis invaded Hungary. It describes her descent into the hell of Auschwitz, a concentration camp where, because of her golden braids, she was selected for work instead of extermination. Filip Müller came to Auschwitz with one of the earliest transports from Slovakia in April 1942 and began working in the gassing installations and crematoria in May. He was still alive when the gassings ceased in November 1944. He saw millions come and disappear; by sheer luck he survived. Müller is neither a historian nor a psychologist; he is a source - one of the few prisoners who saw the Jewish people die and lived to tell about it. Eyewitness Auschwitz is one of the key documents of the Holocaust.

Story
This story is dedicated to all the victims of sexual slavery in German concentration camps, who had to endure inhumane suffering under the Nazi regime. For many years after the atrocities had been committed, both sides - the abusers and the abused - still vehemently denied certain aspects of the Holocaust, and even the victims refused to admit the ugly truth about their incarceration, some out of fear, some out of shame, until several women decided to break an unofficial oath of silence, and brought their stories to life. This book is based on one of those stories. Emilia is a young Jewish woman, whose life slowly turns into a nightmare as she finds herself facing a dreadful choice: to secure her family's very existence by offering herself to one of the men who had put her behind the walls with barbed wire, or perish together with the least fortunate ones.

Great Story
I really loved this book. It took me a few chapters to get into it but it was worth it. It was an amazing story of an amazing young woman.

An Undiscovered Gem!
While there are as many stories of the Holocaust as the are/were survivors, this one is unusual and of particular interest. The narrative is done in first person, as she comes of age during the German invasion of Poland in September 1939. Poland was her home, and the only place she knew. As a Polish Catholic, she was not targeted for death as the Jews were, but was made into a slave housekeeper at a German military headquarters in Ternopol. She served a Nazi major as his personal housekeeper, while audaciously hiding 12 Jews in the basement of the major's estate, a house which was stolen from wealthy Polish Jews. She was "liberated" by the Red Army in 1945, suspected of being a spy, and held in a Soviet prison. She eventually made her way to the United States, and married the diplomat who offered her US asylum. She was honored as a "righteous among the nations" at Yad Vashem, in Jersusalem, Israel. I was honored to hear her daughter speak and tell her story at the Chabad of the Conjeo Center in Agoura Hills, CA in 2019.
If you are interested in the Holocaust, don't miss this one.

very moving story
it is not often that I have a chance to read for leisure, but I highly recommend this book. the narrator does a great job and I felt like I was there for some of the scenes because the author was so vivid in the details. heartbreaking but hopeful, this is a true story that needs to be heard.

Amazing book of faith and courage!
I am very inspired by Irene’s amazing courage and determination to do what she felt was right. Amidst the horrors of war she made a great difference for good. Her courage brought out the good in others

A Must Read For All
This is one of the best written and read recounts I have had the pleasure of reading. It is imperative all young adults and old read and understand the horror that humanity has survived lest we repeat them.
