Im Herbst 1872 erschien in der Tageszeitung Le Temps in immer neuen Lieferungen die erste Fassung von Jules Vernes Roman In 80 Tagen um die Welt. Das Erscheinungsdatum der einzelnen Kapitel entsprach dabei in etwa den Etappen der fiktiven Reisegruppe um Phileas Fogg.
Der exzentrische Gentleman und sein französischer Diener Passepartout brechen am 2. Oktober 1872 von London aus auf. Beide wollen beweisen, dass die Netzwerke des Weltverkehrs eine Umrundung der Erde in achtzig Tagen ermöglichen. Auf dem Spiel stehen nicht weniger als 20.000 Pfund - und Foggs Ehre. Denn der leidenschaftliche Whist-Spieler hat mit Mitgliedern des Reform Club gewettet, dass ihm eine solche Weltreise gelingen werde. Europa, Asien, Amerika, per Eisenbahn, Schiff oder Elefant - an den Abenteurern ziehen Landschaften und Städte vorbei, bis ihnen am Ende doch die Zeit knapp wird.
