Great twists

I now need to find another Egyptian focused audiobook to listen to. This one was great. Had no idea this was setup the way it was and I loved it.

Incredible! Time Travel to Egypt!

This book was great! I loved the time travel concept and different that it was Egypt and the pyramids!!
Unbelievable glimpse into this period of history - fascinating facts about embalming and other day to day life. Terrific job of weaving present day historical knowledge into every day life 5000 years ago.
Warning: some parts are brutal; highly descriptive and thought provoking - did not inspire nightmares or anything but did make me shudder!
The book overall was very long - not sure if there is an abridged version, but it did go on and on in some sections.
Well worth the credit and highly recommend!

There is no "x" in "escape"

Entertaining story though it was a bit wordy and could have been made shorter without losing anything. It was quite well narrated with one glaring exception. The narrator pronounces the word "escape" as "exscape" and I found it grating, each of the 39 times it appears in the text.

highly recommend first of 4 book series can't wait to get the rest. Hopefully on audible.

Please let the reader know that excape is not a word. The word is escape which is pronounced quite differently.

A Gripping Story With Festering Blemishes

The biggest story blunders are twofold, and one is more gravely serious. I'll start with the forgivable one: Ancient Egyptians did not ride camels until 700 or so BCE. It is in my opinion a forgivable oversight, Where I am DEEPLY troubled, and I'm torn between my love of Ancient Egypt and wanting to immerse myself in future stories from the author and learning more, and experiencing more, there is by my standard, a wildly inappropriate underage sexual relationship in the story. It is presented in such a way that the underage female knows precisely what she's doing, and even takes control of much of the situation. I consider this a form of justification. It would NOT have been difficult or impossible to replace this character with a widowed woman who was of legal (even BARELY legal by today's standard). I am wrestling not just with the story, but with my own self-loathing in considering listening to future Imhotep stories and rewarding an author that likely projected a fantasy of his own into the story, and used the plot(s) to justify or validate it.

Something I can forgive, but incessantly grates my nerves as an armchair Egyptologist is the reckless mispronunciations of the names of people, places, and things, as well as the mispronunciation (gross mispronunciation) of the word escape. (The narrator uses "EXCAPE" which to me is hard to deal with. I don't mind the Native American accent, which the narrator has. Even though I'm seriously hearing impaired, I can pick out accents, and it seems oddly appropriate, and suitable. But his grotesque misproununciation of the words Escape, and Kemet in particular (It's "KEM IT" (Almost sounding like Henna) and not "Key met")

I like the complexity of the characters in spite of the simplified storytelling and lack of details that I crave. I want to know how the story ends, but I am battling with myself AND my inherent self-loathing because to me it seems obvious that there is an anachronistic cultural justification for what to me amounts to pedophilia. Yes, in ancient Egypt there were 14 year old females getting married and pregnant. We live in a different age, and it was NOT necessary AT ALL to have this take place. It harder to forgive than graphic sexual depictions of a more age appropriate nature, viscera, gore, and gratuitous violence.

I have very strong feelings about this work, and it's centered upon my opposition to the relationship between Imhotep and his "child bride". I'm going to be brutally honest and frank by saying that the only reason I have not exchanged this audiobook is because over a 3 day period I exchanged two. The first was a 126 hour history about the rise and fall of Rome. The next was a philosophy lecture series I didn't know was taught by an evangelical Trump supporter, and was disgusted by what I was listening to more than 1/4 the way in.

I'm uncomfortable about the underage relationship. I could easily justify it with the historicity, but I think it was HORRIBLY irresponsible for Jerry Dubs to do this, and I wonder if he did it to:

1.) Generate controversy and get the community talking about it, or:

2.) Is projecting a fantasy of his.

Sorry to be so harsh.

History meets Imagination

This was great! I live the historical aspect to the book. Although I hoped that one of the heroes, Btian had survived...

Would you consider the audio edition of Imhotep to be better than the print version?

What did you like best about this story?

Totally original concept from start to finish. Outstanding in every regard, with the caveat that it is long for this type of novel, and it does get abit involved with many characters and agendas, so attention must be paid.

Which character – as performed by Clay Lomakayu – was your favorite?

The American couple were impressive.

I was provided this audiobook by Audioblast in exchange for a fair and unbiased review. Good timing, as once again I had it in my queue for regular downloading. ( Do you think there is some collusion there ? Mmmm? )
All that said, this is truly an epic audio performance. The setting is exotic, the characters rich and realistic, the research clearly in depth, and the overall feel wonderfully fufilling.

It does get bogged down abit at time, and could do with some editing , but on balance this is one of my favourites of the year, and is well worth the credit and the time for anyone.

Fascinating Historical Fiction

I really enjoyed this story. It provided a wonderful glimpse into what is known about ancient Egypt with the insertion of 3 fictitious characters chronicling their adventures in a strange land, amongst strangers. The narrator artfully brought it to life.

A good time travel story. Well written.

The anagram name was a bit obvious, however. The narrator was OK but for some reason, he never could pronounce the word, "escape". He probably orders "expressos" at Starbucks.
