I love to read and have for over four decades, so it is a great compliment to Ms. Tatlock when I say that this book has become my new all-time favorite other than my Bible!

MY NEW FAVORITE BOOK!

The book was well written, and the reader was fabulous. It’s a book that you can’t put down. I live through the polio era, and it was a nice reminder of what we’ve come through.

The historic review of polio

Nova lay under the starry sky every night watching the moon for her brother, Dewey, who could no longer watch the constellations for himself . . . because he instead lay in the hospital stricken with polio in an iron lung, fighting for his life . . . in post WWII 1948 in a small town in Minnesota, life felt hopeless for Nova and her mother, after moving into the boarding house with aunt Dortha. But Nova and Dewey were best friends, not just brother and sister, and Dewey shared his dreams of being the first man on the moon as they lay under the night skies and looked for shooting stars with the telescope. Then, the unthinkable happened . . . Dewey got polio. The many threads of this historical novel come together to tell a deeply woven tale of pain, abuse, love, faith and family unlike any that I have ever experienced. Our God allows us our anger and our doubts . . . and so it was with Nova, Dewey and their mother. And at the same time he sends us his faithful servants, Aunt Dortha, Josef, friends and neighbors to strengthen us and hold us up when our own strength fails. Told through the eyes and ears of a child, this amazingly simple, yet deep story is one for the ages . . . drink it in with your soul.

War Crimes, Polio, Spanish Flu, and HOPE

Ann Tatlock masterfully interwove the stories of two families who each faced heartbreaking circumstances in their lives. The first family is Josep's. Josep is a Holocaust survivor who is a boarder at the second family's house. It is his response to what he has endured during his life and his humanity which make him so notable. The second family is a single mother, Ma, her sister and her two children Dewey and Novalka (Nova). Their story is about the suffering they endure due to polio striking one of the members of the family.

Ann skillfully builds the characters (there are more than just the two families) and has created a novel to remind us all of the horrors that wicked leaders can impose on people, and how cruel a disease Polio is and the reason why vaccinations are so important .

Heartwarming but not light hearted

This tender story of faith lost and found had a profound message of trusting the Lord, not leaning to our own understanding. The characters developed into real people ... i felt I was peaking into their journey and was enriched by that glimpse. .

This book gives comfort to those looking for answers, when answers aren't available. When there are things you don't understand, this book is a message of hope, that there is One Who does.
