Già i greci del VI e V secolo a.C. ritenevano che l'eroe troiano Enea, caduta Troia, avesse terminato le sue peripezie nel Lazio. Così non è stato difficile ai re Tarquini trovare in Enea e in suo figlio Ascanio l'origine dei Latini.
Enea avrebbe condotto da Troia sulle coste laziali il culto del fuoco di Vesta e quello dei Penati che, per i romani, sarebbero diventati il fuoco sacro e Penati di Roma. L'"Eneide" celebra l'epopea di Augusto, figlio di Cesare, discendente da Iulo, altro nome di Ascanio. Così si concludeva un intero ciclo epocale.
