About this listen

“A shivery delight.” (People)

For fans of Sadie and Serial, this “gloriously twisty” (BuzzFeed) thriller follows two teens whose lives become inextricably linked when one confesses to murder and the other becomes determined to uncover the real truth no matter the cost.

What happened to Zoe won’t stay buried....

When Anna Cicconi arrives to the small Hamptons village of Herron Mills for a summer nanny gig, she has high hopes for a fresh start. What she finds instead is a community on edge after the disappearance of Zoe Spanos, a local girl who has been missing since New Year’s Eve. Anna bears an eerie resemblance to Zoe, and her mere presence in town stirs up still-raw feelings about the unsolved case. As Anna delves deeper into the mystery, stepping further and further into Zoe’s life, she becomes increasingly convinced that she and Zoe are connected — and that she knows what happened to her.

Two months later, Zoe’s body is found in a nearby lake, and Anna is charged with manslaughter. But Anna’s confession is riddled with holes, and Martina Green, teen host of the Missing Zoe podcast, isn’t satisfied. Did Anna really kill Zoe? And if not, can Martina’s podcast uncover the truth?

Inspired by Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca, Kit Frick weaves an electrifying story of psychological suspense that twists and turns until the final chapter.

Didn’t love it

I did not think this was a great book. I had trouble following the storyline. It seemed a little implausible. I did enjoy the narration, however.

Great

Review on this are annoying. There wasn’t even racism or politics. There’s brief mentions of a character being black and targeted and that’s quite literally it. The plot twist came out of nowhere and I loved it. Would recommend for fans of a good girls guide to murder, it reminded me of that a lot! And the narrators voice was so lovely to listen too.

Interesting Story Well Done

I liked the story, and it was well presented with multiple voices and some surprising twists. It was sometimes a bit hard to figure out who was talking. This was complicated by the frequent switching back and forth from "then" and "now".

Surprise

Very clever plot. Different than anything I have read before. It was captivating from beginning to end and the characters came alive.

Great storytelling!

Enjoyed the performance. The use of multiple narrators is sometimes more distracting than anything else. Not so here. Escapist fiction. Even after seeing ahead to the end, the characters were worth sticking around for, to hear their version of events. Recommend for a long road trip.

VERY Far Fetched and Somewhat Rambling

The story is relatively well written in terms of use of language. The plot is very far-fetched in that the mother of the protagonist fails to speak up with a family secret to save her daughter from prison when they have a good relationship... and there is almost no reason remaining to keep the secret. The protagonist also has a variety of psychological or psychiatric issues that are incredibly poorly explained, making them seem like a crutch for a poor plot. On the other hand, the character development is reasonably interesting and the characters are multidimensional. I ended up listening to the last 1/3 of the book at 195% of normal speed, but it was marginally worthwhile.

I Killed Zoe Spanos

⭐⭐⭐

This is my first audio book! Crazy, right? I was extremely excited to try this book out, as I had seen it previously at Barnes & Noble and I have been trying to get around to a good YA Thriller. I will say that I highly suggest listening to this book via audiobook, simply because it is a multiple character perspective and it also follows along with a character's podcast that occurs during the storyline. with some thrillers, you can predict the ending. However, this book kept me going towards the final goal of finding out who Zoe Spanos' killer is, but with only allowing you to see maybe one step in front of you the entire time. For this reason, the story kept me engaged and entertained through its entirety. I only gave the book 3 stars because of one ginormous plot hole that comes towards the end of the book. The entire story is building towards this realization and it is given to you with very little back story or explanation and instead uses one of the final chapters to fill in the gaps. Besides this, I felt this book was engaging, poetically written at times, and also allows for some exploration into secondary characters which only adds so much depth to the book. Highly entertaining novel!
