Hver dag gør jeg rent i det smukke Winchester-hjem, fra gulv til loft. Jeg henter familiens datter fra skole. Og jeg forbereder et lækkert aftensmåltid for hele familien, før jeg går op på mit lillebitte kammer på øverste etage for at spise for mig selv.
Jeg prøver at ignorere, at Nina roder, bare for bagefter at kunne nyde at se mig rydde op efter sig. At hun fortæller mærkelige løgnehistorier om sin egen datter. Eller at Andrew, hendes mand, ser mere og mere nedslidt ud for hver dag, der går. Men når jeg ser ind i Andrews flotte brune øjne, som er så fulde af smerte, så er det svært ikke at forestille sig, hvordan det ville være at leve Ninas liv – med walk-in-klædeskabet, den smarte bil og den perfekte mand.
Kun én gang prøver jeg en af Ninas sarte, hvide kjoler. Bare for at mærke, hvordan den føles. Men det finder hun snart ud af … og da det går op for mig, at døren til mit loftsværelse kun kan låses udefra, er det allerede for sent.
Én ting kan jeg dog trøste mig med; Winchester-familien ved ikke, hvem jeg i virkeligheden er.
