I’m a nearly 50 year old man with a wife and 3 kids who’s fallen in love with hiking as of 4 years ago. We’ve only done day hikes as a family to date, but it’s a recurring daydream (for my wife and I) to go away for 3-7 days for a backpacking trip.
I’m fairly confident in what’s required for taking day hikes and have to admit that I was ignorant to the differences and between hiking and backpacking. That ignorance could have resulted in a catastrophic failure for the st trip we have planned for this summer. Needless to say, a catastrophic backpacking failure for a busy married couple with 3 kids would probably put the lid on any future trips.
Thankful for the information (needed equipment, preparation, and what to expect during) and the encouragement that this daydream we have is definitely one that can become reality!

I'm an advanced backpacker, but I previewed this to see if it would be beneficial to my youth group and I think it'll be perfect for them and it saves my voice. :) Even though it's a very dry read, it's a great resource for teens and beginners. Of course, there are minor things I disagree with, as with any thru hiker/ long distance backpacker, ie water bladder. Definitely use a water bladder but I also get two Gatorade bottles every time I hike into towns.

Covered most of the basics

Great resource for beginner hikers, especially those that are brand new. Presented good info on all topics without being too much information that would overwhelm the reader/listener.
Highly recommend for the new person.

Good concise info

Good book outlining important items that should be completed PRIOR to first overnight trip and details that are helpful once on the trip. It is wrote for a beginner that has zilch hiking experience. Would recommend to listen to when first thinking of doing a trip and again about a month prior to help be prepared so have a successful hike.

Does what the title says... covers lots of basics
