Peculiarly Narrated Audiobook

I listen to a lot of audiobooks, both fiction and nonfiction. I had read this as an eBook some time ago, but I didn’t remember its details. So, the first chapter left me scratching my head. The narrator did the first part of the chapter like it was being acted, not narrated. While I don’t mind—and actually like—an “acted” fiction audiobook, it felt very distracting in a nonfiction book. The narrator also mispronounced some words, which I never like to hear in an audiobook.

Here’s my original review of the eBook version. Nothing has changed about my opinion of the book’s content.

Short, Peculiar Boundary Book for High School and College Students
Just last week, I listened to an audiobook on this precise subject, so I was wondering how this book would compare. Perhaps it would add to what I already learned from that book, it may be a rehash, or something completely different. Unfortunately, I found it to be very limited and somewhat lacking. First, it's very short, with only six chapters. Topics include types of boundaries, dealing with toxic people, maintaining good relationships while setting boundaries, and how to stop people pleasing. Each chapter has a similar format, starting with a brief introduction, pre-content questions to ponder, boundary-issue scenarios, the core content (including step-by-step instructions for how to address the chapter topic), possible ways to handle the scenarios at the start of the chapter, and a mini quiz about the chapter topic. All scenarios feature college or high school students. No scenarios had people over 25 (though they were ethnically diverse). This youth focus wasn't clear in the book's description or subtitle. Not only do young people have issues setting boundaries, but middle-aged adults and seniors can struggle with this, too. While the chapters had a decent structure, the author only glossed over the surface of the topics. There isn’t enough information for someone who struggles with boundary issues to get past them. The other audiobook I listened to had so many helpful suggestions and ways to build up your set of personal and professional boundaries. The pre-content questions didn't always make sense. For instance, how could you possibly know the seven boundaries the author would discuss before you read about them? The little comprehension quizzes at the end felt strange, as I am well past the age of having to do such things in school. The step-by-step instructions were minimalist and repetitive and didn't include key steps I believe are essential to setting boundaries. If setting healthy boundaries is something that you need to work on, there are undoubtedly other books that are better than this out there.

Good refresher

I felt there was a lot of references to race and gender issues in most of the examples. It was a good listen for a refresher course and the first few chapters were awesome. The main points felt like they started to repeat from the middle to end of the book, which lost my interest.

Good informative listen

This was an eye opening listen for me. I know and have always known I need to set boundaries, however; because I'm a people pleaser and afraid of confrontation it's been near impossible. When you sit down to listen to this I suggest you have a note book or journal to take notes and complete the work stated in this. Doing that will make this more interactive for you. Good luck on your journey as well. I've got work to do.
