People often say, "I feel like I've been run over by a truck." Katie actually was.
On a sunny morning bike ride in Brooklyn, 24-year-old Katie McKenna was forever changed when she was run over by an 18-wheeler. Being crushed under a massive semi wasn't something Katie should have survived. After 10 hours of emergency surgery, she woke to find herself in a body and a life that would never be the same.
In this brutally honest and surprisingly funny memoir, Katie recalls the pivotal event and the long, confusing road to recovery that followed. Between the unprepared nudity in front of her parents postsurgery, hospital happy hours, and the persistent fear that she would never walk again, Katie details the struggles she's faced navigating her new reality. This inspiring memoir follows Katie's remarkable journey to let go of her old life and fall in love with her new one.

She did not write in a way to cause bereavement. After 'gobbling' this gem in two sittings, I have not cried a bucket of tears. Instead, it has been an enrichment.
It was told in such an engaging, vulnerable and endearing manner, that I found myself wanting to change the title. Maybe to... how to get run over by a truck and survive, thrive, cry laugh and love yourself. Or even, how to get steamrolled (literally) and battle your way to the new you, lady parts and all!
There is so much good I could write about this book. Just a few things though:
Her narration was exquisite,
buy this book for yourself and all adult friends, and finally,
this goes into a genre I call, 'An important work,!
Thank you, Katie, for sharing your story in such a transparent, poignant and comical way. A clinical telling of it would clearly not have been your story.
Thank you, also, for writing about the difficult truths regarding that percentage of medical care staff (that may not become compassionate unless they were to be steamrolled), lack of privacy, and the good bad and ugly we are forced to see in ourselves.
As one who lives with MS, various old injuries, multiple surgeries and a few other chronic conditions, I appreciate the candor in your writing of events and the inclusion of your most intimate thoughts and fears.
You have given this veteran of pain and pain-induced loneliness, a great deal of encouragement.
From the best places in my heart, chris

My only slight negative is relating to some of the things she missed doing only because they aren't things I'd miss--probably due to our disparity in age. She is much more interested in partying and drinking and listening to music that I'd never consider. But it's a memoir so it's what she missed. It is frustrating to miss out on so much of life going on while trying to get back into it. She did a great job describing that journey.
