2022 SOVAS Award Finalist for Audiobook Narration—Short Story Anthology—Best Voiceover

That long-ago summer, four friends came face-to-face with strange, dark events they couldn’t explain away. As they grew up and left town, they each tried to forget. Instead, the secrets lingering in the shadowy corners of their minds shaped their lives, haunting each of them in their own way. Now, in this chilling four-part serial by New York Times bestselling author Lisa Unger, it’s time to stop running. It’s time to come home.

All My Darkest Impulses
What really happened to the girl who walked into the woods and vanished forever? It’s a never-forgotten mystery that clings like a shadow in a short story about dark memories and inescapable fears.

For disgraced professor Matthew Merle, the inheritance of his grandfather’s crumbling mansion is both a burden and an offer of safe haven. His childhood friend Claire Allen, a psychiatrist, desperately needs a haven of her own after one of her patients unleashes his dark side. At turning points in their lives, it’s inevitable that they should return to the past. And to Merle House. It’s been waiting for them.

Fog Descending
A grief-stricken spiritualist thought his faith in life after death was broken. Until the ghosts of his past come calling in this short story about memories colored by fear.

Driven by an uncanny mystery from his youth, Ian Randall became a “spiritual cleanser,” ridding disturbances from homes. But his belief in the beyond was challenged by his wife’s death. Merle House, the root of Ian’s obsession, could change that. The woods are restless again. Maybe here, Ian will find what he needs - if he’s willing to make a deal with the dark.

Circling the Drain
Is it a hoax, or is it something unspeakably real? In this short story about evil games and spiraling secrets, whatever bargain you strike, there’s a price to be paid.

Mason Brandt dropped out of seminary and found a job at a spiritual center offering guidance to troubled teens. Mason was one himself years ago—a suspect in a young girl’s disappearance. When a female student is found murdered, Mason is dogged by suspicion and flees. He hopes Merle House will offer him sanctuary once again.

Love the Way You Lie
What’s drawn four damaged people back to haunted land? The answer could destroy them all in a gripping short story about trapped memories and the lies we tell ourselves.

Matthew, Claire, Ian, and Mason haven’t been back to Merle House since the summer they were sixteen. They tried for years to put their history behind them, to forget the mystery of the girl who vanished so long ago. But a powerful force from their past is still at play. This time, there’s no hiding from it.

Wow! Fantastic!

Just spooky enough.
I didn’t find it confusing at all as some other reviews stated.

The characters developed right along with the story.

All of the narrators were great, too!

Will definitely listen to this again, around Halloween!

Five stars!

I was hooked and wanted more after listening to circling the drain. I got a house of crows the same day I’m not gonna lie I was wrapped in the story. I couldn’t stop listening. The more I listened the more analogist the story became to Stephen King’s It. That’s not a bad thing. If you like it, then you’ll like this. The reason I gave at four stars is the writer try to wrap it up in a nice bow at the end but I still feel like it was all too convenient. They never explained the dark man there were a lot of loose ends. Still very good. For the record, I would never go to that Yoga retreat!

4 stars but still very good.

Enjoyed listening to this, the old house, the secrets, spooky woods, all the things a good story has. . .

Unusual stories, a different bad character than in many other books I have listened to.

I liked having different voices reading difference sections of the book.

Lisa Unger has another twisty scary absorbing book; highly recommed it.

I loved the storyline and the buildup to the ending. I love Lisa Unger 's type of writing as well.

I loved the whole thing

Disclaimer: I’m big in character development. This story gives the reader characters but there are so many holes in the floor of who they are 🤓
The jump from childhood to adulthood was confusing each time because the reader is left to wait until the name is mentioned to see who is being are talked about.
The entire premise of who the Darkman was, how he possessed people or if he even did so was lost within the story. Did the old man Merle know the Darkman haunted his house? Was Matthew actually possessed or just bad? How was he killing the girl’s? And most importantly why was Jewel targeted? Was Matthew going to kill his own daughter?
In the end the story falls flat in it’s essence.

Almost good

I liked listening to this. Saskia make levels is one of my favorite narrators, and her performance did not disappoint. The listen was not too scary and made me think, as well as entertaining me to a certain degree.

Enjoyable listen that leaves something to the imagination

Lisa Unger is an amazing writer and this story, while unsettling in its darkness truly spoke to me about rebuilding life. Highly recommend it!!!

Beautiful story

I had trouble switching back and forth at the beginning of this story. It took me a while to understand whose part I was listening to. I had no idea who was at the bottom of this mystery, so I was very surprised. The narration was very good.
I like this author and will continue to follow for more books.

Confusing at times

Great story telling. I was fooled till the end. The hints were subtle and nicely couched.
