About this listen

One woman takes hold of her legacy in an epic tale of Viennese romance, deception, and danger.

Vienna, 1892. Against all odds, at the height of Belle Époque splendor, Anna Sacher has taken possession of her late husband’s hotel, across the street from the famous opera house. At a time when controlling such a business was an opportunity afforded only to men, Anna is as vigilant as she is relentless. Now, under her ownership, the Hotel Sacher thrives amid the tumult of a changing continent, even as intrigue follows in the shadows.

Through its opulent halls stride visitors from all walks of life, including some of the most glamorous figures of Viennese society - opera singers, princes, princesses - and the maids and manservants who wait on them.

Some guests will find romance. Some will unearth secrets. And some will discover much more than they expected....

A little slow but that's history . . .

Despite the pace of this story I still enjoyed it and found it pretty interesting. There were so many lives intertwined in this story . . . It was bound to be good.

if I wasn't reading this for book club, I would have left it midway. none of the characters are likable. I found the story boring.

Unlistenable

I can't get past the horrible accents and poor emphasis. I won't finish this one.

Slow story that left you unsatisfied

Struggled to get interested in the book initially. Had large jumps in time that left story lines feeling incomplete and the ending did not wrap things up well.

Hotel Sacher

I enjoyed this book very much. It lets you see behind what the historian says. I would recommend this book to all my friends.

Affected Narraton

I couldn't go beyond the first chapter because of the very affected and poor narration ruined it for me so the 3 star rating might be unfair. Fortunately I also purchased the kindle version of the book so will just read it and rate accordingly.

Meh

Narrator: The narrator was great! Enjoyable to listen to and has a range of distinct voices.

Story: I really wanted to like this, but I found it a bit slow and hard to complete.
It was an okay story for a casual listen.

Boring!

I finally quit at about halfway through. Absolutely no plot, no story, and no likable characters.

Gave up after 2 hours

I rarely read books in translation because you never really know if you loved or hated it because of the translator. This one started off well enough but got progressively more ridiculous and fractured. There were far too many story lines (some absurd) and after a couple of hours I didn't feel like I knew any of the characters at all. They were all completely one dimensional and said and did things that were just...off. So was this a badly written book made worse by the translation? Who can say? But I did not care one iota what happened to any of these cardboard characters.
