About this listen

Thirty-six of the most interesting writers in the Pacific Northwest came together for a week-long marathon of writing live on stage. The result? Hotel Angeline, a truly inventive novel that surprises at every turn of the page.

Something is amiss at the Hotel Angeline, a rickety former mortuary perched atop Capitol Hill in rain-soaked Seattle. Fourteen-year-old Alexis Austin is fixing the plumbing, the tea, and all the problems of the world, it seems, in her landlady mother’s absence.

The quirky tenants - a hilarious mix of misfits and rabble-rousers from days gone by - rely on Alexis all the more when they discover a plot to sell the Hotel. Can Alexis save their home? Find her real father? Deal with her surrogate dad’s dicey past? Find true love? Perhaps only their feisty pet crow, Habib, truly knows.

Provoking interesting questions about the creative process, this novel is by turns funny, scary, witty, suspenseful, beautiful, thrilling, and unexpected.

Interesting concept

The story seemed to have the potential to end several time throughout the chapters.it was almost like the story was forced to continue in order to give the next author an opportunity to continue. For the reason it was somewhat disjointed

Coming of age story

My dear friend (who lives in Seattle) suggested that I read this book and I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed hearing the history. Brilliant connection and styles from the various writes - more books should be down this way if it was easy for writers !

clever idea.

I enjoyed the way you could point out the different writing style from on author to the next but some how the flow of the story and the voice of the protagonist stayed consistent.

Fine Story But.....

This was a fine story but the ending left me with the unanswered question of how the Hotel Angeline ended up as it did? The future of the hotel was a main point throughout the story but how it came to its final status seems to have been lost. Ending felt very rushed!

the story has a weird story line - it was hard to follow at times.

Bold effort. No success

Is there anything you would change about this book?

unredeemable. start again from scratch, perhaps with one author

What was most disappointing about the authors’s story?

the plot becomes fantastical and interest is lost rather than gained

Did Pam Ward do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

characters weak, differentiation would not help

Could you see Hotel Angeline being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

No

36 voices? 1 novel?

What a charming and interesting group they are, men, women and 1 very clever crow.

I love these books written by dispart authors each writing a chapter, this is a very good example.

Too Many Writers!

It starts out rather engaging and then some of the authors begin to use the story for their own political views and ended making a mess of the plot and even messier characters.

Too scatterbrained. And why is there teen sex?

Why does everyone have to be gay!? It would have been a good story I guess? But I can't have my kids listen to this. The lesbian relationship was not PG. I know we are all trying to be tolerant now, but really. Why can't kids just be kids?
