About this listen

Even at the tender age of nine, Anna Ingevich knows her life will never be the same when her mom, Karin, dies at the age of 30.

Annas father, Bjorn, is a hard man, but that is what living in Norway requires. Life does not get any easier for her when he marries Marion, who already has three children of her own.

As the days go on, she begins to ask herself one question, over and over: How do I escape Norway and get to America?

Iver Olson loves his family in Norway, but as a boy at the docks, he begins to hear about a faraway paradise called America. A land of milk and honey, they say, where farm ground was so abundant that the government just gave it away. He knows he must go there.

Rasmus Johnson was born to love wood and to create not just homes or pieces of furniture, but works of art and family heirlooms. As a young man, he falls in love with his childhood friend and sweetheart, and tells her of his dream to start a new life in America.

Follow three Norwegian immigrants circa 1900 on their journeys of love, courage, and honor in Honoring Anna.

From Norway to the South Dakota Prairie

This isn't a drama-filled book. This is a genuine story about the journey one young woman made from Norway to Reva, South Dakota. I grew up south of Reva, SD so this story was of particular interest to me. Having grown up on the prairie myself, I could picture both forks of the Grand River, the Slim Buttes, and the long wagon ride to Belle Fourche. I could picture the blizzards, feeding the cattle, and the rattlesnakes. To endure a long ocean voyage and then traverse west to a barren, harsh land only to find love and build a family took grit and determination that yielded the most beloved rewards. We also witness that promises can be kept even when life has a hiccup here and there. I can't wait to read Hoff's sequel.

Accurate

I felt as though this book was an accurate description for the time period with a sweet story to boot!

This is a book for a 12-year-old

I don’t know how this was recommended for me but it is a book written by a child, for a child, it seems. Very disappointing.
