About this listen

From New York Times bestselling author Courtney Cole, the Magic of the Christmas Season sends a woman back in time to the 1940s where she meets her own grandmother and learns the true meaning of family and the holiday.

Piper McCaulley doesn’t know which way is up or down. Her gran, her last remaining family, died two weeks before Christmas, leaving Piper to reevaluate her life. Did she really want to stay chained to the family business just to hang on to this old house? She didn’t care that her great-great-great grandpa had built it with his own hands. How could she make huge life decisions if she’d never even been outside of Alaska?

She needs to leave the snowy wilderness that’s her backyard and see the world, and since her gran left her a battered old compass, Piper takes this a secret message from her beloved grandmother: to follow her heart.

But before she is even a foot outside the door, Piper finds herself caught in a blizzard and wakes up in 1945 in the original home that her ancestors had built—a time when her gran was just a girl Piper’s age. Once she has gotten over the shock, Piper has the joy of getting to know her grandmother in a whole new way, a way that sheds light on everything Piper had come to know and not know about her own past.

Over the course of one magical holiday season, Piper must go on a journey through time to learn the meaning of real love, home, and how a family legacy can connect one another forever.

Mostly a good story

What person who has been raised in the wilderness of Alaska would not understand that the safety of all the people in that home was more important than the bears? That in 1944, in the wilderness, they would have thought twice about eating the bear or the turkeys? It is mentioned that the men had been hunting for meat but so far had not been successful, but they’re going to listen to a young woman they don’t know and is upset that killing the bear is inhumane. I’m sorry, it doesn’t make sense.

I’m an Alaskan and I Loved this Book!

As an Alaskan born in 1976, and raised in the small town of Willow, I grew up with sled dogs, was raised on moose meat, and EVERY Christmas break I can remember the power would go out for at least a couple of days! This Christmas book brought back a lot of good memories. While parts of the book made me roll my eyes a few time overall it is a great story. I struggled with the stars and would rate 4 1/2 stars if I could. The writing and narration are very good. The characters are well developed and likable. The plot is enjoyable. The book description is adequate and I don’t feel the need to add anything. There is romance without going into details and the language is clean. The main character going back in time has made for a really good twist to a cozy Christmas yarn. I laughed a lot, cried at parts, and most of all recalled a lot of good memories of my grandparents and family. Alaskans have always relied on each other in a time of need during the harsh winters and this book captures that well. I know next year I will listen to this story again!

Excellent story in every way

I loved this book, loved going back in time and getting a real glimpse of life in Alaska in 1944, loved that particular setting, loved how clean the story was, the family connections, the love between grandmother and granddaughter, the ending, and very important in an audiobook, the narration!!
