About this listen

Debutante Peyton Fuller's life consists of friends, parties, and waiting for her beau to propose to her. With little knowledge of politics and fighting, her cosseted world changes overnight as soldiers stream into Harrisburg to prepare for a war between the states. As they march past her door, she catches the eye of one soldier who makes her question everything.

Union Colonel Mason Stout gets a second chance to maintain his military career as the training officer for what may be the worst war imaginable. Still recovering from a crippling injury, he meets a local female volunteer who draws him like no other woman has. Unfortunately, he has seen the horrors of war and vows to make no woman his widow.

Will Peyton be able to resist her inconvenient attraction to the handsome colonel for the beau she thought was her true love? As the nation poses on the brink of war, another battle brews between their hearts. Will Peyton and Mason find victory in each other? Can he claim his Civil War bride?

I really enjoyed this!

A read full of history, mystery and romance. It's so nice to be able to read clean wholesome romance books and still feel the enchantment of love. While I tend to be more of a wholesome contemporary romance reader, this historical read pleasantly surprised me.

The narrative was very good on this.

1st in a great series

I listened to this one on audio.

What a great start to the series! If the rest of the series is near as good, I will be in love. The story was great with a bit of mystery thrown in. I thought the characters were well written and the story flowed nicely.

The narrator was great, I thought she did a fantastic job.

Sweet Historical Romance

I really enjoyed this romance! It was like all her friends and family were conspiring to hook her up with the colonel even though she was "practically engaged" to her long time beau! The narration was really good! The characters were different enough to tell them apart, and then men sounded like men!

Wonderful

This was well written, interesting and a sweet romance. There were so many things going on, such a different time. The story and characters unfolded so well, made you feel the story. I enjoyed this read and recommend it to all. I received it as a gift and this is my voluntary review.

Enjoyed this audiobook

This audiobook was great and I loved listening to the narrator especially when she was reading Shay’s part or any of the Irish. I have read stories about indentured servants before and it’s a subject I like. It amazes me that these people will leave everything they know and give up family to try and make their lives better. They really didn’t know just how bad it would be in America and was expecting greater things. Add this audiobook with a sweet romance to your collection. I think you will love it!

Good story

This is a great story, it just ended a bit abruptly.
I would love an extended version.

Wonderful & Entertaining

This started out with two giggly girls and I've very pleased to say that these girls matured as the story progressed. Once the military came to town, things picked up. It was pretty easy to understand that Justin was duping everyone. I really liked Mason, Pup and Peyton. I loved listening to this. This narrator does a brilliant job of keeping you entertained.

Enchanting story

I enjoyed this story even though it was very short. It has the romance that I love and the period in history is what I crave. I was rather disappointed that there wasn’t more drama in story. It should have had more crisis for Mason to come the aid of Peyton or a daring rescue, damsel in distress kind of situation to show him masculine and Peyton to be a frail female.
