About this listen

In Hippie Chick, a rebellious teenager finds her mother dead in the bathroom. To save her from living alone with a difficult father, her older sister sends her a one-way plane ticket to leave New Jersey. Landing in San Francisco, she is thrust into a lifestyle way beyond what she is ready for, and that challenges all previous notions of how one behaves. It is 1963, and we are brought along as Ilene becomes immersed in the unfolding of the '60s during the earliest days of sexual freedom, psychedelic drugs, the jazz scene, and rock ’n’ roll.

This is a deeply personal story of how one young woman managed to survive and even to thrive in the face of the whirlwind of experiences coming at her. It is filled with a rich tapestry of moments that run the gamut from the sublime to the ridiculous, and everything in between.

I Love Hippie Chick

Full disclosure… I’ve loved that same hippie chick since we first met at the Oregon Country Faire in 1977. She invited my teenage son and me to join her and other friends in a commune/style household next to Oregon’s Mackenzie river.
We’ve been dear friends ever since, and I was honored to find myself included in the later pages of her wonderful book. It was a shock to find my friend/roommate/employee/boss in the pages of such a wonderful book.
I can attest to the honesty of her stories having heard many of them myself over the 45 years of our relationship. I always knew she was smart, funny, daring and artistic but I never knew she would someday bring all of that into a nationwide best seller!
Read her story, you’ll laugh, you’ll cry…and you’ll be my friend too.

Along for the journey!!!

I loved listening to 'Hippy Chick', read by the author, Ilene English, herself! It is so heartfelt and relatable…I laughed out loud, cried, and felt all the feels as she traversed her coming of age story during the late 60's and 70's. I appreciated how she shared so honestly and vulnerability! I felt as though she tucked me under her wing and took me along on her journey. I can't recommend this book enough! Thank you Ilene!

60’s HIPPIE TOO … NO DRUGS

Authors life’s story was a period of life I experienced also in Madison, WI 1965 to 1973. Left family farm and lived for many years with very little money, apartment life with 3 friends, and job as secretary. On top of the world, making own decisions, Vietnam war and campus protests. Thoroughly enjoyed Ilene as the reader …. Her story very special. Excellent account of young women from that era. Wanted to be independent, not dependent on men, so many unique friends along the way and that great sense of community. Thank you Ilene for sharing your life experiences.
