"Sie sind also tot?", fragte Herr Jakob.
"Jaja", erwiderte Frau Wanke und drängte Herrn Jakob sanft, aber bestimmt zur Seite. Es hatte angefangen zu regnen und sie hatte keinen Schirm dabei, Herr Jakob mutmaßte, dass vielleicht auch Tote nicht nass werden wollten.
"Entschuldigung", sagte er, "kommen Sie doch erst einmal herein." Im Hausflur nahm er ihr den Mantel ab und hängte ihn an die Garderobe.
- Über die Entdeckung des Winterschlafs und das Anhalten der Zeit -
Hin und wieder gelingen Herrn Jakob kleine Fluchten aus seinem Leben als Bibliothekar und Berufspendler. Doch die zunehmenden Anforderungen des Alltags und eine als bedrohlich empfundene Hektik wecken in ihm eine immer stärkere Sehnsucht nach Ruhe. Die Gespräche mit einem Huhn bringen ihn endgültig dazu, sich nicht länger gegen sein Bedürfnis zu wehren: Herr Jakob beschließt zu schlafen.
Traum und Wirklichkeit verschränken sich allmählich, und Herr Jakob muss sich fragen, ob seine Traumwelt weniger wahr ist als die sogenannte Realität. Sind Wachen und Schlafen nur zwei Bewusstseinszustände oder vielmehr zwei Welten, deren Wege auf wundersame Weise miteinander verbunden sind?
Nachdem er das Glück des Winterschlafs entdeckt hat, fühlt Herr Jakob sich auch im Wachzustand zu neuen Wahrnehmungen befähigt. Dann trifft er auf eine Gleichgesinnte, die allerdings noch Probleme mit dem Durchhalten längerer Schlafperioden hat.
Die Geschichte von einem Menschen, der sich auf eine außergewöhnliche Reise begibt und dabei einen erstaunlichen Ort entdeckt.
