About this listen

Six-time New York Times best-selling author and former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright - one of the world’s most admired and tireless public servants - reflects on the final stages of one’s career, and working productively into your later decades in this revealing, funny, and inspiring memoir.

In 2001, when Madeleine Albright was leaving office as America’s first female secretary of state, interviewers asked her how she wished to be remembered. “I don’t want to be remembered”, she answered. “I am still here and have much more I intend to do. As difficult as it might seem, I want every stage of my life to be more exciting than the last.”

In that time of transition, the former Secretary considered the possibilities: she could write, teach, travel, give speeches, start a business, fight for democracy, help to empower women, campaign for favored political candidates, spend more time with her grandchildren. Instead of choosing one or two, she decided to do it all. For nearly 20 years, Albright has been in constant motion, navigating half a dozen professions, clashing with presidents and prime ministers, learning every day. Since leaving the State Department, she has blazed her own trail - and given voice to millions who yearn for respect, regardless of gender, background, or age.

Hell and Other Destinations reveals this remarkable figure at her bluntest, funniest, most intimate, and most serious. It is the tale of our times anchored in lessons for all time, narrated by an extraordinary woman with a matchless zest for life.

Editor's Pick

Gathering Inspirations from a Powerhouse Public Figure
"During this time of self-isolation, our Women@Audible group started a thread to send individual members uplifting quotes from women. While researching the perfect quote to send to Editor Christina, I realized that so many of my favorite quotes have come from former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. (Not surprising—she was a professor where I did my undergrad, and I may or may not have gotten her to sign my senior thesis). Luckily for me, Secretary Albright’s latest book— Hell and Other Destinations—is here just in time to serve me up more wisdom and insights (and quotable moments) from a woman who has refused to slow down."—Katie O., Audible Editor

Amazing role model

MA is such a great role model for everyone, not just women. Her stories are hilarious and poignant, and I love that she read her story herself. So much more enjoyable for the listener. I applaud myself for waking up at 6am each day, and she's up at 4:30. If only we could all be so accomplished.

A Needed Voice

Madeleine Albright offers a message needed for today. Although written just mc before COVID19 and George Floyds murder, it has a prophetic tone. She is serious, funny, engaging and insightful all at the same time. My only regret is that I’ve finished the book. I want more.

The real Iron Lady

The book gave me all the emotions I would get from a fiction book it kept me lingering on her every word and her insight to her life after “the job”

Fabulous

Brilliant, smart, humorous, thoughtful, and all-together wonderful. It could have been twice as long and I’d hang on every word.

Enjoyable and informative

I didn’t know much about the author, except her name. It was interesting to hear her story and in her voice. I will be sad when she dies.

Informative and Enjoyable

This book is a memoir of Albright's work after her time as Secretary of State. It is informative, funny, and a helpful reflection on the situation in which we now find ourselves. Albright reads the book herself, which makes the whole experience even more enjoyable.

Living legend

Madeline Albright‘s life story and contributions to date are absolutely fascinating. I almost think that a good share of her experiences and perspective should be required reading for reasoned adults who want to best understand the big picture inside and beyond America. Madeline’s explanation of world events from her vantage point as a government employee and later as a private citizen are noteworthy in their clear presentation and believability. Truth matters and Madeline’s will stand the test of time.
