About this listen

"Sorry, kid. I'm not in the mercy business."

Michael Remington, an executioner for the heavenly host, is the son of a fallen angel. He's seen a lot of evil in his century-and-a-half, and he doesn't much like it. He doesn't much care for some of the things he's had to do, either. Executing a sorcerer who also happens to be a 15-year-old kid, for instance. He's old and tired, but he can't quit. No matter how badly he wants to.

"That's rule one: Choices matter."

Now, a rogue genie is gathering power. That calls for an executioner, but a fallen angel is offering something Michael hasn't had in a long time - the chance to be free - if only he'll lay down the Mantle. Michael must choose between comfort and safety or pain and duty, and he has to make his choice soon because his friends are about to get caught at ground zero....

An Urban Western Fantasy - A Heavenly Tale of Rede

Heaven's Hitman: The Angels' Executioner, Book 1, penned by the brilliant wordsmith Allen Goodner and masterfully narrated by Daniel F. Purcell, is an exhilarating journey through the gritty, supernatural underbelly of the world, brimming with intrigue, redemption, and a protagonist you can't help but root for. At its core, this audiobook takes the classic Western genre and infuses it with a generous dose of urban fantasy, delivering a unique and captivating narrative that will keep you on the edge of your seat for every one of its heart-pounding 1000 words.

Michael Remington, our protagonist, is not your typical hero. He's a snarky, world-weary executioner for the heavenly host, a role he's inherited thanks to his lineage as the son of a fallen angel. Picture a man in a duster and stetson, wandering through a world where angels are more annoying than angelic, and bad guys are as nasty as they come. Michael's character is a breath of fresh air in a genre often crowded with cookie-cutter heroes. His sarcasm and cynicism add depth to his character, making him someone you can't help but relate to.

The story kicks off with Michael being tasked with the unimaginable - executing a sorcerer who just so happens to be a 15-year-old kid. Right from the get-go, we are thrust into a morally complex world where choices matter. Michael's internal struggle with his duty and the undeniable anguish he feels about his actions sets the tone for the entire narrative. You'll find yourself empathizing with him, even as he carries out his grim duties.

But the heart of this story lies in Michael's constant battle with the Mantle, the responsibility he can't escape. He's old, tired, and craving freedom, but the Mantle is an inescapable part of his existence. When a rogue genie starts amassing power, Heaven calls for an executioner. However, the offer of freedom from a fallen angel tantalizingly dangles before Michael. He faces a gut-wrenching choice between comfort and safety or pain and duty. The stakes couldn't be higher, and the urgency is palpable.

This urban western fantasy is a rollercoaster of emotions, and Daniel F. Purcell's narration adds a layer of depth that elevates the experience. His ability to convey Michael's snark, the subtle nuances of the angelic characters, and the sheer tension of the plot is nothing short of remarkable. It's clear that Purcell not only understands the characters but breathes life into them, making each one distinct and memorable.

The pacing of Heaven's Hitman is nothing short of spectacular. It's a fast-paced thrill ride from start to finish, with every chapter leaving you hungry for more. The action sequences are beautifully choreographed, allowing you to vividly imagine each move and feel the adrenaline coursing through your veins. Michael Remington's merciless approach to those who threaten to bring the infernal to the human plane is both terrifying and strangely satisfying.

One of the standout features of this audiobook is the cryptic nature of Michael's instructions from Heaven. It adds a layer of mystery and intrigue to the narrative, keeping you guessing and engaged throughout. Allen Goodner masterfully weaves a complex web of supernatural elements and heavenly politics, making Heaven's Hitman not just a tale of action, but also a cerebral adventure that will have you contemplating its themes long after you've finished listening.

In this tale of redemption, the characters shine brightly. Michael Remington is a hero with depth, a flawed yet relatable figure who grapples with the weight of his choices. The annoying angels, with their eccentric personalities and their own agendas, provide both comic relief and moments of genuine emotion. The suitably nasty bad guys add the perfect touch of darkness to this urban fantasy, making the conflicts all the more intense and satisfying.

As the story hurtles towards its climax, Michael's choice becomes ever more pressing, and the fate of his friends hangs in the balance. The tension reaches a fever pitch, and you'll be holding your breath as the final showdown approaches. The resolution is both surprising and emotionally resonant, delivering a powerful payoff that leaves you eager for the next installment.

In conclusion, Heaven's Hitman: The Angels' Executioner, Book 1, is a masterful work of urban western fantasy that redefines the genre. Allen Goodner's storytelling prowess, coupled with Daniel F. Purcell's exceptional narration, creates an audiobook experience that is truly unforgettable. With its snarky hero, complex characters, fast-paced action, and thought-provoking themes, this is a must-listen for fans of the genre and anyone looking for a tale of redemption in a world where choices truly matter. So, saddle up and embark on a journey that will keep you enthralled until the very last word.

good

This was a lot more violent than I expected. If this is what happens when you want to quit your job-- Holy moly!!! I enjoyed Michael. I voluntarily listened to a free copy of this and am giving an honest review. The narrator did a good job bringing it to life.

Great new-to-me author!

I received this audiobook for free in exchange for an unbiased review. I have to say I loved it! Fast paced with plenty of action. The Hitman deals harshly with people who try to bring the infernal to the human plane, but his instructions from Heaven are often cryptic. Great book!
