Publisher's summary

View through the eyes of a young recruit not quite sure how he ended up enlisting in the United States Marine Corps. This raw story gives readers the true insight into how a young eighteen year old transforms from civilian to hardcore Marine. US Marine Corps Boot Camp is more than most men can handle. Hawaiian Pineapple Jarhead transports you to the miserable Parris Island and training center of screaming drill sergeants and swamp-like conditions instead of the beautiful beaches of Hawaii.

Diversity and narratives…

The Life and Adventures of Pineapple Sam does well in describing the adventurous spirit and resilience that characterize Sam. Specifically, the scenes involving hitching across the U.S. and his truly brave activities in the Marine Corps are really engaging. Finally, the camaraderie amongst Sam and his friends, especially in fun misadventures, makes this narration fun and exciting.

The father of Sam imposes a certain stability into the life of this character through his unbending discipline and, at the same time, some moments of tenderness. Vivid descriptions of Hawaiian landscapes and culture adorn this story. The book was exceptionally well edited and error-free.

This is quite an adventurous and stirring tale by Pineapple Sam of a Hawaiian native's journey through his life. From playful childhood in Spanish Camp to daring exploits in the U.S. Marine Corps, the story of Sam is filled with excitement and challenges. The main people involved are Sam, his adventurous friends Mondo and Randy, and his supportive yet strict father. Of course, everything changes when Sam hitchhikes across the United States, going on a rash of exciting adventures.

Although the book has interesting information, it would be better with more character development. Some of the characters are really shallow, such as Sam's friends, and I believe there are scenes that need more emotional depth. For instance, the elaboration regarding his family and his relationships with friends could be elaborated to make full sense of what exactly drives the protagonist. Transitions into different phases of his life could be much smoother in order to maintain the flow of the story.
