About this listen

Edgar Allan Poe Award Nominee, 2024

A troubling discovery leads Chief of Police Kate Burkholder on a strange investigation ending at a long-abandoned Amish farm in this short mystery from bestselling author Linda Castillo.

When a family dog brings home a human bone, Chief of Police Kate Burkholder finds herself on a desperate search for answers. Where did the bone come from? Who does it belong to? And perhaps most importantly, are the bones a result of foul play? With Halloween approaching, the unsettling questions garner uneasiness, rumors, and macabre theories among the residents of Painters Mill.

Determined to get to the bottom of the case—and stop the ghost stories upsetting the town—Kate and her soon-to-be husband John Tomasetti embark on a sweeping investigation. Will their search for the source of the human remains uncover the truth? Or will it lead them to an even darker discovery buried on hallowed ground?

The Kate Burkholder We All Know And Love!

I have to say that I think this is the oddest Kate Burkholder novel to date and thus far, the only one that I haven't given a 5 star review!

There was nothing wrong with the writing, story or characters, it was just the story that didn't keep my interest as much as the others in this series! This is my absolute favorite series, as a matter of fact, one of the very few that I absolutely keep up with as soon as a new book is released and this book wasn't bad, just wasn't my favorite!

I love that this whole series is narrated by Kathleen McInerney! She is an AMAZING narrator and fits this series so perfectly! I love how she changes her voice to fit that of children! She is utterly magnificent and brings so much value to the books she narrates!

Even though it's not my favorite, it still contained the writing and characters that we have all come to know and love with this series and Linda Castillo!

Terrible

Reader messed up voices, too predictable, lots of repeats. So disappointing since her other books were so good.
