About this listen

A rock band’s reunion is looking more like a farewell tour in a captivating mystery by New York Times best-selling and award-winning crime master Max Allan Collins.

No sooner do Hot Rod and the Pistons reunite for their induction into the Iowa Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame than two band members take a final bow. Both alleged suicides. A tragic way to go out. A bum way for one-hit wonders to be remembered. But it’s Labor Day weekend. The show must go on.

With replacements at the ready, the Pistons are back on home turf to headline the first ever Rock and Country Music Fest. Police Chief Krista Larson and her father, Keith, are there listening. And watching. Because they suspect there may be more to the band members’ untimely deaths than anyone else can see.

As Krista and Keith navigate the investigation, a dark picture of the band’s rocky history begins to take center stage. As betrayal, revenge, and blackmail start playing out in the present, the father-daughter team fear that this encore may be the band’s finale.

The old guy can write suspense novels

I had not listened to a Max Allan Collins novel since Reeder and Rogers series several years ago and I was not impressed by either of the first two novels in that series. When Audible Listener Shelley published a 5 star review of GIRL CAN'T HELP IT (Book 2 Krista Larson series) yesterday I decided to give give the audio novel which is free with Kindle Unlimited a try. I agree with Shelley's review!

Max Allan Collins has been writing novels and screen plays for a long time, so long that I'm surprised to learn he is only 72 years old. In terms of sheer volume of work I suspect he is the most prolific male writer alive today. 75 of his novels are available at Audible. Actor and musician Dan John Miller narrates this and many other of Collins' novels. Miller is ALWAYS superb.

Sequel is as good as the first...

This is the second book in the Krista Larson series. This can easily be listened to as a stand alone. Since I really liked both books I suggest listening to them in order. If you have kindle unlimited these books are FREE to borrow with the kindle edition.
The publisher’s summary gives a very good overview so I won’t add anything to it. This is a straight forward story with a few red herrings for suspects. The protagonist works well with her semiretired father and I liked getting a glimpse into their relationship.
Dan John Miller does a great job narrating.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Improvement on previous book in series.

I enjoyed this book a lot more than the first book with these characters. The narration was good and I liked the setting. I thought that the ending was kind of anticlimactic, but overall I enjoyed the book and would recommend it.
