About this listen

David is a modest man who works in a bank, lives in a rooming house, and enjoys books and quiet walks by the lake. Three months after unexpectedly being fired from his job, he takes a temporary position at a mortuary. There, sitting alone in the "slumber room" one late afternoon, he sees something he cannot comprehend, something no science can explain, something that will force him to question everything he believes in, including himself.

After his metaphysical experience, all his relationships change - with his estranged wife, his girlfriend, his mother - and he grudgingly finds himself at the center of a bitter public controversy over the existence of the supernatural.

Good questions

The author poses some very good questions about life and death, and then describes the ways a life can be altered when a person has to confront those questions head-on: no turning away or ducking the issues. The characters are intriguing and their behavior is believable. The only negative - for me - is that the story doesn’t have a succinct ending. That won’t bother all readers, but after following character and plot development, I like to have everything wrapped up at the end. I’m glad I read it, and I will read other works by this author.

snooze alert

i believe this author is a Poe and S. King fan. The audio contains MANY a detailed side journey...way too many for this listener.
