Beautiful story!

This is the first book I've read by Shanna that wasn't a historical Western! I hope this is just the beginning of a great series because this was a beautiful story and I can't wait to read more!

My own Aunt is Japanese and she married my Uncle about 20 years after WWII! I always thought it was normal but after hearing this story I'm even more amazed by their wonderful marriage (they are still happily married), and the acceptance of my family towards my Aunt! I've very proud to be a part of my family and I love my Aunt tremendously!

Loved this story

Very unique unseen side of history. Adored all the charecters. Showed the good and the bad of society. Lovely story. Especially loved Petie.

Good book, but felt unfinished

I felt like the book ended too soon, as we did't find out what happened to her family.

This is a historical tale set during WWII. Shanna did a wonderful job dealing with a disturbing period in American history by introducing a host of characters who felt all the real emotions that surface during war time, both the good and the heartbreaking. The way, we humans, treat each other is sometimes mind boggling.

I appreciated that the love story was allowed the time it needed to unfold. The narrator did a remarkable job bringing the characters to life. I hope he narrates more of Shanna's audio-books in the future.

Historical, romantic and intriguing
The interplay between cultures and characters is so realistic! Re-reading already and just finished it. I recommend all her books!
