About this listen

The last show has ended, but the nightmare is just beginning.

Tonight, Riverview Theaters is closing forever, the last remaining business in a defunct shopping mall. The moviegoers have left, and Jo and her six coworkers have the final shift, a shift that quickly takes a dark turn.

First a stranger arrives with a chilling accusation. Then the power goes out and their manager disappears, along with the keys to the lobby doors and the theater safe, where the crew's phones are locked each shift. The crew's tension turns to terror when Jo discovers the dead body of one of her co-workers.

Now their only chance to escape the murderer in their midst is through the dark, shuttered mall. With its boarded-up exits and disabled fire alarms, the complex is filled with hiding places for both pursuer and pursued. In order to survive this night, Jo and her friends must trust one another, navigate the sprawling ruins of the mall, and outwit a killer before he kills them all.

Action packed

I’ve been reading Natalie D Richards since her debut and always enjoy her books. If FOUR FOUND DEAD had been written by another author, I might have skipped it because I generally prefer books that take place over a longer period than a few hours.

As someone who worked in malls as a teen, I loved the backdrop of an abandoned mall for its creepy atmosphere. Cat and mouse games generally don’t interest me, but I knew what I was getting into from the blurb.

Narrator Jo’s PTSD from witnessing her father’s murder as a child added depth to her character and the story.

If fast paced, action novels interest you, FOUR FOUND DEAD is a must read.

Well balanced characters

This isn’t my usual listens but I felt the characters were well written and crafted. The story was good and kept a lot of tension even though I myself wouldn’t say it’s horror. It is a great thriller however with a little mystery. The only mark against it was sometimes I could hear the performer swallow. At times it felt like they were doing it for the character and I can see that works but for me it’s a sound no matter how faint can make me pause.

Great listen

The last thing we expect while closing up for the last time is to be picked off one by one. Especially after surviving a robbery gone wrong years ago.

Story was fast and pretty good. Narration was good and made sense. Great read for a trip or something. Pretty short but good

A gripping tale of tragedy and survival

This was an amazing book! From start to finish you never knew exactly how it would all end or where the story was going. It kept you wanting to listen and Rebecca’s voice was perfect. I could see it all in my head as I listened. Ten out of ten for me!

Chilling, but a little too repetitive

On the whole this was a creepy closed circle horror where you don’t want to see anything bad happen to the characters as they’re chased down by their psychotic former manager. However the book runs a bit too long with the constant running through the closed mall and the constant flashbacks to our narrator’s traumatic past got a bit grating by the climax when the author could’ve only sprinkled a bit of info along the way and then eventually tell us what happened to Jo’s dad instead of beating us over the head with it. I do like that Jo does overcome her past experience and takes charge to save her colleagues/friends, but it was a neat twist on who actually saved the day at the end but is still tinged in sadness as you know that three innocent people are dead for something that could’ve been avoided had the truth been told. The audiobook reader was a bit too monotone in her delivery outside of a few scant sections once the terror ratchets to 11 near the climax where she did add a bit more emotion, but it could’ve been better given the situation the characters are set in. If you’re at all triggered by gun violence or themes of abuse or grooming, you may want to avoid this book but if you can handle it, then maybe check this out
