Acerca de esta escucha

This fierce and beautiful story charts the histories of two women: Rae, young, unmarried, and far from home, awaits the birth of her first child. Lila, a fortune-teller with no interest in the future, lost her own daughter more than a quarter of a century earlier in New York. When these two women meet in Southern California, it's earthquake weather - the time when unexpected things happen. Immediately, their lives and fortunes become intertwined, as Rae tries to break away from the man she has been with since high school and Lila reaches into the past to search for the child she lost.

This contemporary world is set against a series of Russian folktales told by an old woman who lives at the edge of Manhattan, in a place so well hidden it can only be found once in a lifetime.

Beautifully written, but I was really hoping for more at the end. Her books usually wow me.

Hoping for more

The timbre of this book is in the depths of psychological illness and makes me very uncomfortable. I didnt understand the dreams and symbols and tho I recognise my own timidity, this is not a book that soothes me.

Too sinister for my taste

Alice Hoffman has finally won me over with "Fortune's Daughter". This is the story of a young girl who made a choice when she had no choice to make. It's a simple story we all have heard, but Hoffman gives us a front row seat to how a choice can mold lives, haunt the soul, and bring love and redemption to the people who deserve it the most. The novel is driven by strong female characters who have Hoffman quirkiness, and who gain our respect and admiration.

I love her imagery. I live how she describes even the most bizarre in a calm natural tone.

frustrating

Story started with Rae, a young woman easily swayed by an asshole boyfriend. Then she meets Lila with an interesting back story. I enjoyed Lila's story, it was heartbreaking, but she found a new path and love after heartbreak and despair. . However, as time and secrets unraveled, Rae developed a backbone and became a little more interesting as she pondered her life choices. But, Lila's story faltered and she became exceedingly unlikeable and self-centered as she relived her past and alienated those around her. Lila sort of redeemed herself in the end, but not enough to like her character. though her husband, Richard, was a true gent.

meh
