Acerca de esta escucha
Harry Turtledove has written a dramatic re-creation of an astounding battle, telling a bloody story of courage and hope, freedom and hatred. With brilliant characterizations of all the main figures, this is a novel that reminds us that Fort Pillow was more than a battle---it was a clash of ideas between men fighting to define what being an American ought to mean.

Historia
From "the master of alternate history" comes a new trilogy that reimagines a mid-20th century in which General MacArthur, without bothering to consult President Truman, detonates nuclear warheads in several Manchurian cities after China enters the Korean War. In his acclaimed novels of alternate history, Harry Turtledove has scrutinized the twisted soul of the 20th century, from the forces that set World War I in motion to the rise of fascism in the decades that followed.

In 1914, they called it The Great War, and few could imagine anything worse. For nearly three decades, a peace forged in blood and fatigue has held sway in North America. Now, Japan dominates the Pacific, the Russian Tsar rules Alaska, and England, under Winston Churchill, chafes for a return to its former glory. But behind the façade of world order, America is a bomb waiting to go off. Jake Featherston, the megalomaniacal leader of the Confederate States of America, is just the man to light the fuse.

Historia
In 1864, after Union general William Tecumseh Sherman burned Atlanta, he marched his sixty thousand troops east through Georgia to the sea, and then up into the Carolinas. The army fought off Confederate forces and lived off the land, pillaging the Southern plantations, taking cattle and crops for their own, demolishing cities, and accumulating a borne-along population of freed blacks and white refugees until all that remained was the dangerous transient life of the uprooted, the dispossessed, and the triumphant.

Reseñas editoriales
Turtledove's historical fiction about the Civil War battle over Fort Pillow, Tennessee, presents narrator John Nelson with a particular challenge. The novel shifts among numerous characters, most of whom hail from Tennessee, which means that Nelson cannot rely on different accents to distinguish one from another during the story's dialogue. He chooses to voice all of them with exactly the same gravelly - though highly entertaining - delivery. With all the characters, including the legendary Confederate General Bedford Forrest, sounding precisely alike, listeners must quickly memorize names and backgrounds to follow the story.

Historia
It's 1974, and Jerry Stieglitz is a grad student in marine biology at UCLA with a side gig selling short stories to science fiction magazines, just weeks away from marrying his longtime fiancée. Then his life is upended by grim-faced men from three-letter agencies who want him to join a top-secret "Project Azorian" in the middle of the north Pacific Ocean—and they really don't take "no" for an answer. Further, they're offering enough money to solve all of his immediate problems.

However ... the narrator would have served the story much better by not trying to do a Southern accent. All of the characters ended up sounding like players in an Amos and Andy show. I found it very distracting and it certainly didn't add to the story.
The accents!!

But the bottom line is forest was a grandmaster in the KKK. He was a terrible person setting it aside. This book is great.
