Publisher's summary

FitzChivalry Farseer has become firmly ensconced in the queen’s court. Along with his mentor, Chade, and the simpleminded yet strongly Skilled Thick, Fitz strives to aid Prince Dutiful on a quest that could secure peace with the Outislands - and win Dutiful the hand of the Narcheska Elliania.

The Narcheska has set the prince an unfathomable task: to behead a dragon trapped in ice on the isle of Aslevjal. Yet not all the clans of the Outislands support their effort. Are there darker forces at work behind Elliana’s demand? Knowing that the Fool has foretold he will die on the island of ice, Fitz plots to leave his dearest friend behind. But fate cannot so easily be defied.

great end of the trilogy

This trilogy may be the best of the 16 book series and the closest thing to a happy ending in such a realistic made up world.

Fantastic conclusion to the series

Listening to the series in order has made all the difference in the world. Small details recall the previous series and it seems that it makes the series feel complete. The epilogue also makes the Fitz and the Fool series make more sense. Last time I didn't have this series and basically read & listened piecemeal as I got them. I remember the confusion I felt at the circumstances of them being away from buck keep... it made that series a hard read and very slow to get into. I speculate that reading in order will make all the difference.

Best of the three trilogies about Fitz and the Fool.

Oddly enough, I listened to the 3rd trilogy first and then the first, and then the second. Suprisingly, I loved this one the best. I loved all the new characters and their well developed, very different personalities. The fantasy world Hobb built really came through in the second. You don't appreciate the magic and beasts in the third trilogy like you do in the second. Even reading the third first, it seemed as though all the magic was just there, with only a shroud of mystery. Loved it!

It hurt so good.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I already have with caution. While Robin Hobb added a brilliantly fresh writing style to my primarily male library, her seasoned assassin made me sick with his pathetic self loathing and marterdome. I wanted to write him a script for Lexapro.

What did you like best about this story?

Very well developed characters and story line throughout the series. An ironic, refreshing whilst irritating writing perspective in the presence of the depressed protagonist. Ultimately, I couldn't imagine NOT finishing the series because it was so good.

Have you listened to any of James Langton’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not. I really enjoyed him however.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I could for sure.

Third Time Through

I teared up more this time around than the first two. Though some may find this trilogy slow, it is the work of a master.

A perfect finish to this trilogy

I love this story! The entire "Realm of the Elderling" series is great, but this second trilogy about FitzChivalry Farseer is especially moving.
