Publisher's summary
One hundred and twenty years ago, Mark Twain left Huckleberry Finn’s father dead in a room crowded with oddities: a wooden leg, women’s underclothing, two black cloth masks, and more. Now, in a resonant and remarkable new novel, Jon Clinch tells the story of how the brutal and explosive Finn met his end in a room jammed with the telltale artifacts of his strange and mysterious life.
Along the way, Clinch introduces the listener to a mesmerizing cast of characters: Finn’s own fearsome father, known only as the Judge; Finn’s brother, the sickly, sycophantic Will; the hermit Bliss, a blind moonshiner; the strong and quick-witted Mary, a former slave who becomes Finn’s mistress; and, of course, young Huck himself.
Finn is a novel about race, the sin of slavery, and the burdens of paternity. Written in a style both precise and thunderous, understated and violently elemental, it draws from our literary heritage to create something new. Finn is a hypnotic, completely original, distinctive American story.

Eleven-year-old George Washington Black—or Wash—a field slave on a Barbados sugar plantation, is initially terrified when he is chosen as the manservant of his master’s brother. To his surprise, however, the eccentric Christopher Wilde turns out to be a naturalist, explorer, inventor, and abolitionist. Story
A body always tells a story - but this child’s was a blank page. Rita reached for the lantern. She trained its light on the child’s face. "Who are you?" she murmured, but the face said as little as the rest of her. It was impossible to tell whether, in life, these blunt and unfinished features had borne the imprint of prettiness, timid watchfulness, or sly mischief. If there had once been curiosity or placidity or impatience here, life had not had time to etch it into permanence. Only a very short time ago, the body and soul of this little girl had still been securely attached.

From humble beginnings in rural Tennessee to his heroic death defending the Alamo, frontiersman, adventurer, and politician David Davy Crockett embodies the spirit and ideals of the national character. Even during his lifetime, tales of the sharpshooting, skilled woodsman were - to his delight - told, retold, and elaborated on. As a US congressman, the former Creek War militiaman steadfastly opposed President Andrew Jackson's Indian Removal Act.

Story
This book is based on the true life of Henry Stuart. When the 67-year-old former professor finds out he is dying of tuberculosis, he vows to “learn in solitude how to save myself.” He sets off for Fairhope, Alabama, with only the writings of his beloved Tolstoy for company. There, the barefoot poet builds himself a small hut and slowly becomes an inspiration for the rest of the utopian town. When his last few months become his last few years, Henry’s attempt to understand death becomes a lesson on life.

Story
My father had an expression for a thing that turned out bad. He'd say it had gone west. But going west always sounded pretty good to me. After all, westwards is the path of the sun. And through as much history as I know of, people have moved west to settle and find freedom. But our world had gone north, truly gone north, and just how far north I was beginning to learn.

Story
Marshal Shay McQuillan has a lot on his hands - stagecoach robbers to hunt down, a murdered fiancée to avenge. He certainly doesn't need an identical twin brother he never knew existed turning up out of the blue and telling him what to do. Even less does he want pretty Aislinn Lethaby trying to rescue him from danger. Because, to tell the truth, Aislinn is a sweet distraction from duty whom Shay just can't resist.

Ireland, 1845. To Briana Walsh, no place on earth is more beautiful than Carrowteige, County Mayo. The small farms that surround the centuries-old Lear House are managed by her father, agent to the wealthy, reckless Sir Thomas Blakely. Story
London, 1889. For Ira Adler, former rent-boy and present plaything of crime lord Cain Goddard, stealing back the statue from Goddard's blackmailer should have been a doddle. But inside the statue is evidence that could put Goddard away for a long time under the sodomy laws, and everyone's after it, including Ira's bitter ex, Dr. Timothy Lazarus.

Remarkable!
An amazing origin story for Huck's Pap and by extension Huck himself. The language and psychology both powerfully and eloquently shed light on Finn's monstrosity through his human frailties.

Gut wrenching story line.
The prequel makes perfect sense. Mark Twain left a lot of clues in original book. Narration great job.

Finn brought to life in Clinch's homage to Twain.
Where does Finn rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
I would say that it ranks in the top 5 audiobooks that I have listened to over the years. The book is well written and the narration by Ed Sala is pitch perfect.
What did you like best about this story?
The story allowed a glimpse at the humanity present in even the most dispicable of men. I even allowed for a bit of compassion for a monster, with few if any redeeming qualities.
Which character – as performed by Ed Sala – was your favorite?
I like the fire and intelligence of Mary. Her love for Huck and her ambition for him to better himself, redeems Huck from repeating the life and sins of the father, Pap Finn.
Who was the most memorable character of Finn and why?
Perhaps the most memorable charactor was, the dried up old husk
of the Widow Douglas. She is coniving and self important, and yet at the same time being torn between convention and compassion
when it come right down to it.

Perfect
The pacing of the narrator, the finely constructed plot, the elaboration on an infamous minor character from a beloved classic, the descriptions of river life, the complexity of race and character, the Cormac and Faulknerian prose--a damn perfect audiobook, in my humble opinion.
