About this listen

The next thrilling installment from the Barker and Llewelyn series, masterfully narrated by Antony Ferguson.

London, 1893, there is a poisoner loose in the city, with deaths piling up, and private enquiry agents Cyrus Barker and Thomas Llewelyn are apparently his next target in Fierce Poison by Will Thomas.

Private Enquiry agent Cyrus Barker has just about seen it all—he's been attacked by assassins, his office has been bombed, and evil-doers have even nearly killed his dog. But never before has a potential client dropped dead in his office. When Roland Fitzhugh, Member of Parliament arrives to consult Barker and his partner Thomas Llewelyn, he falls to the floor, dead, upon entering. As they soon learn, he's been poisoned with a cyanide laced raspberry tart, and the adulterated tarts also take out an entire family in the East End. Labelled the Mad Pie Man by the press, Barker and Llewelyn are hired by former Prime Minister William Gladstone to find out who has targeted the House of Commons's newest member.

But before they can even begin, they find themselves the latest target of this mad poisoner—with Barker's butler poisoned with digitalis and dozens of diabolic traps discovered at their home. On the run from their unseen adversary, Barker and Llewelyn must uncover the threads that connect these seemingly random acts and stop the killer before they and their closest friends and family become the latest casualties.

Nicely done

Really enjoyed this novel. Nice mix of skill and luck to have figured out the killer. Loved Gladstone character. Thomas is growing and so is the author. Cyrus is stuck in his grumpy rut. Needs a little more personality once in awhile. Have to agree with another review that Rebecca does not add anything to the permanent cast. She could in the future. The two chefs are one dimensional but it works in the plot schemes. The narrator is superb. I recommend this novel with 4.8 stars. Narration is 5.0!

Kept me guessing

This was a good story. The characters are all well written. For once I did not figure it out halfway through the mystery.

Enjoyable Series

I enjoy these stories. They address some of the social issues of the time (issues that are in actuality timeless) yet remain entertaining without preaching.

In keeping with the series

I enjoy the Barker and Llewelyn series, having listened to each book. It makes for clever, light reading. I love when fictional characters interact with historical ones. In this one, we get to meet Gladstone. Antony Ferguson is a superb narrator, fantastic with accents. I finished this story in about 2 days.

Worth the Listen

I enjoyed the time period and a bit of humor in the personalities’ language. Most interesting search for an intelligent poisoner.

Probably one of the best of the series

I have listened to all of the books in the series, they are some of the best Victorian crime novels I've read. The writing is well researched, the characters are well developed, and the stories are engrossing and believeble.
The frosting on the cake is the narration by Antony Furgeson - hearing his narration takes the series to an elevated level I don't think could be matched just reading the books.

Phenomenal series!!!

Hands down the best series I’ve ever read and/or listed to!!! Amazing character development!!! A multitude of interesting, fun, and uniquely endearing personal and interpersonal relationships… To say this series simply “gets you invested in the characters” would be a gross understatement and might not even be something that our dear Mr. Llewelyn would have the words for ;)
