About this listen
A stunning stand-alone thriller from the leading crime writer in South Africa, author of the best-selling Benny Griessel series.
I want to tell you about my father's murder. I want to tell you who killed him and why. This is the story of my life. And the story of your life and your world, too, as you will see.
Nico Storm and his father drive across a desolate South Africa, constantly alert for feral dogs, motorcycle gangs, nuclear contamination. They are among the few survivors of a virus that has killed most of the world's population. Young as he is, Nico realises that his superb marksmanship and cool head mean he is destined to be his father's protector.
But Willem Storm, though not a fighter, is a man with a vision. He is searching for a place that can become a refuge, a beacon of light and hope in a dark and hopeless world, a community that survivors will rebuild from the ruins. And so Amanzi is born.
Fever is the epic, searing story of a group of people determined to carve a city out of chaos.

Fabulous book!
This might be one of the best books I have read in a long long time if not ever. Make no mistake it’s long! But wow. What a fabulous story line, great characters and a wonderful world that Meyer created. Love love love

This is a SUPER great book, I recommend it!
I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a gritty, well written book.
The narrator does a superb imitation of the characters, leaving me to remember every main and sub character, long after listening to the story. The story itself is excellent for a reader looking for a dark, harsh, gritty and well written narrative that captivates and yet, disturbs the reader in just the right ways. it doesn't glorify on the disturbing factor and more does so subtlety and leaves some of the events to the imagination. now the book is very serious and quite frankly, very sad at some points, but the story knows when to be fun and enjoyable, and not overebdulge on violence, gore and sex; stuff like that would ruin the story, luckily, this book has just the right amount to keep you on edge (Disclaimer: There's no sex in this book, thankfully). If you want a story that shows the horrors, and the cruelty of a Post-apocalyptic world, this is the book for you. It's also pretty relevant to our today's Covid-19 but the virus is ramped up to a more catastrophic level. The characters are memorable, well voiced and very different from one another, that actually feel like they were written by different people; They feel real; the while story feels like this has actually happened, and could happen at anytime. This book incorporates fear by giving you the idea that anything can happen at anytime. It's a masterpiece, through and through. Props to Deon Meyer, the author and the narrator Jennifer Woodburn. Absolutely worth the price tag! I can't recommend this book enough; listen to the sample first, and you'll see what I mean. It feels way more believable than the other wasteland books I've read, that feel too much like fiction, than fact. Excellent work on this book Deon, Peter and Jennifer!

GRIPPING, FROM BEGINNING TO END
We listened to this book while doing a week long trip into the Khalahari.
My hubby and I usually have different tastes in books but for once we both agreed; this book was a wonderful listen. A great story, and the narration was fantastic.
I cannot wait for Meyer's next book!

A compelling listen
As a huge Deon Meyer fan, I’d flagged this book for reading a year ago, but couldn’t bring myself to endure the emotional father / son drama. Other reviews persuaded me to give it a go. Wow. Besides the bizarre reality of listening to it during an actual pandemic and some of the prescient (well researched) context, what a compelling listen. I could literally not switch it off as the stories and interactions grew and took shape. In the car, while shopping, packing, cooking dinner... I was transported to a South African landscape I know and love. Look at his website for footage of the actual setting. What a thorough artist this author is in his word pictures.
The performance is amazing, capturing most of the characters voices authentically and giving the story added colour.
I feel wrung out, drawn in and captivated as glimpses of dry SA humour shine through the drama and unraveling of the twists and turns. I hope like hell he’s not right.
