About this listen

The American women’s movement has been shrouded in myths, argue three leading scholars in this bold and revisionist history. Eschewing the conventional wisdom that places the origins of the American women’s movement in the nostalgic glow of the late 1960s, Feminism Unfinished traces the beginnings of this seminal American social movement to the 1920s, in the process creating an expanded, historical narrative that dramatically rewrites a century of American women’s history. Also challenging the contemporary "lean-in", trickle-down feminist philosophy and asserting that women’s histories all too often depoliticize politics, labor issues, and divergent economic circumstances, Dorothy Sue Cobble, Linda Gordon, and Astrid Henry demonstrate that the post-Suffrage women’s movement focused on exploitation of women in the workplace as well as on inherent sexual rights. The authors carefully revise our "wave" vision of feminism, which previously suggested that there were clear breaks and sharp divisions within these media-driven "waves". Showing how history books have obscured the notable activism by working-class and minority women in the past, Feminism Unfinished provides a much-needed corrective.

Useful information, well read

I got this book for some research into feminism for a presentation later this winter. I was surprised by how much I already new, but this book helped refresh my memory and straighten out some information for me about the earliest iterations of feminist action.

Good quick review if you need it. Good intro if you need that.

Amazing book for young men and women

Are you or anyone you know confused or angry about the “gender wars” ?? Then this is the book for you / them! This easily digestible history frames the present in terms that make things much more clear than any amount of news coverage of feminist / gender issues ever could.

meh

just fine, struggled to finish, had some inadvertent opinions I could have done without. Prefer a history book=facts only and allow me to conclude

I simply couldn't...

As much as I tried to focus on this work I couldn't get through the introductions. It seemed like 2-3 chapters of self perceived relevance and opinion. I just made it to chapter 3 and would like to delete it from my library.
