ORKNEY ISLANDS, 1797 – Agnes Tulloch feels a little cheated. This windswept place is not the island paradise her husband promised it to be when they wed. Now with four young children, she struggles to provide for her family while her husband grows increasingly distant.

Her curiosity is soon replaced with vexation when her husband hires her out as cook and washerwoman, leaving Agnes with no say in the matter. The story was interested and moved along quickly. Without spoiling anything, I will say that I was a little surprised by the “ending” in that I was expecting the protagonist to be rewarded with a happy one. It didn’t seem to be the case at first, but it resolves well in the end, in a unique way that made me both happy for Agnes, and also smiling over how sinister it all was. Excellent “read”/listen.
