Acerca de esta escucha

Tracing postmodernism from its roots in Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Immanuel Kant to their development in thinkers such as Michel Foucault and Richard Rorty, philosopher Stephen Hicks provides a provocative account of why postmodernism has been the most vigorous intellectual movement of the late 20th century.

Why do skeptical and relativistic arguments have such power in the contemporary intellectual world? Why do they have that power in the humanities but not in the sciences? Why has a significant portion of the political left - the same left that traditionally promoted reason, science, equality for all, and optimism - now switched to themes of anti-reason, anti-science, double standards, and cynicism?

Explaining Postmodernism is intellectual history with a polemical twist, providing fresh insights into the debates underlying the furor over political correctness, multiculturalism, and the future of liberal democracy.

This expanded edition includes two additional essays by Stephen Hicks: "Free Speech and Postmodernism" and "From Modern to Postmodern Art: Why Art Became Ugly".

In three hours I learned more on philosophy than in all my years of education, and understood what is behind the post-modern movement to its core. This is na essential read for anybody trying to navigate the 2020's.

Clear, complete and relevant

This text is a carefully constructed investigation into the emergence of postmodernism. It is precisely annotated and at some points painfully detailed in its connection from one philosopher to the next on the journey toward nowhere and meaninglessness: postmodernism. This is a must listen and must read to prepare oneself to understand and confront the imminent power that postmodernism is going to bring upon us: at least for a season. Do not miss the opportunity!

Extraordinary introduction

This book really goes into depth of why it’s impossible to argue with people who deny reasoning and other mental faculties. The build up summary of philosophers to how they’ve poisoned minds is masterful.

Philosophical framing of current mindlessness

For a normal person Post Modern thinking is inexplicable. How can "intellectuals" actually believe the thinking leads to "truth".
The foundational error of Post Modernism with its belief there is no possibility of perceiving an objective reality is a simple fact. If life cannot perceive reality why does life with perception exist? Evolution describes the culling of life which does not perceive reality sufficiently to survive. If Post Modernism describes accurately a sunset of life's inability to perceive reality, that life disappeared very, very long ago.
Post Modernism is the method used to justify a cultural, political, economic aesthetic which destroys human dignity, aspirations, hope ... and has killed millions since 1900.
The aesthetic requires a denial of human perception of reality, perception of reality did not evolve from millions of years of survival.
Post Modern advocates believe they can fool all the people all the time. The ash heap of history is piled high with such delusion. Yet relegating Post Modern to the pile will be painful for Western Civilization.
By the way, Post Modern thinking explains why National Socialism captured the German people.

Post Modernism Explained Well

Dr. Hicks in this book has diagnosed the seminal problem of our day. Postmodernism has infiltrated many aspects of our society with only the intent to mock and destroy. Hicks’ brilliant dissection of the origins and causal pathway of the postmodern movement towards our current Western World should be required reading in every undergraduate philosophy class.

Well worth the listen.

This is a serious work of the history of postmodernism, starting with Kant. I'm not a philosopher or academic, but I'm educated and read a lot, and I still learned things I didn't know. I didn't know that post-modernism started with Kant, for example.
While the author is clearly not a fan of pomo, he doesn't set up any strawmen. In many parts of the book he didn't even provide an opinion after giving an account of some history.

While accessable, I wouldn't start with this book because it assumes a degree of knowledge of the main people and events.

Accessable academic work by philosopher
