About this listen

"Finlay’s debut is a twisty puzzle that will please fans of thrillers, suspense, and true crime. Cady McClain and Jon Lindstrom capably voice a large cast of characters and keep ratcheting up the tension." (Library Journal)

One of the Most Anticipated Books of 2021: • Newsweek • CNN • E! Online • Goodreads • BuzzFeed • PopSugar • BookBub • Bibliofile • Mystery and Suspense

In one of the year’s most anticipated debut psychological thrillers, a family made infamous by a true-crime documentary is found dead, leaving their surviving son to uncover the truth about their final days.

“They found the bodies on a Tuesday.” So begins this twisty and breathtaking novel that traces the fate of the Pine family, a thriller that will both leave you on the edge of your seat and move you to tears.

After a late night of partying, NYU student Matt Pine returns to his dorm room to devastating news: nearly his entire family - his mom, his dad, his little brother and sister - have been found dead from an apparent gas leak while vacationing in Mexico. The local police claim it was an accident, but the FBI and State Department seem far less certain - and they won’t tell Matt why.

The tragedy makes headlines everywhere because this isn’t the first time the Pine family has been thrust into the media spotlight. Matt’s older brother, Danny - currently serving a life sentence for the murder of his teenage girlfriend Charlotte - was the subject of a viral true crime documentary suggesting that Danny was wrongfully convicted. Though the country has rallied behind Danny, Matt holds a secret about his brother that he’s never told anyone: the night Charlotte was killed Matt saw something that makes him believe his brother is guilty of the crime.

When Matt returns to his small hometown to bury his parents and siblings, he’s faced with a hostile community that was villainized by the documentary, a frenzied media, and memories he’d hoped to leave behind forever. Now, as the deaths in Mexico appear increasingly suspicious and connected to Danny’s case, Matt must unearth the truth behind the crime that sent his brother to prison - putting his own life in peril - and forcing him to confront his every last fear.

Told through multiple points-of-view and alternating between past and present, Alex Finlay's Every Last Fear is not only a gripping thriller, it’s also a poignant story about a family managing heartbreak and tragedy, and living through a fame they never wanted.

Loved the story, hated the narration

Really enjoyed the story, although I had much of it figured out about halfway through. Still, I thought the writing was solid, and the characters were developed enough to make me feel as if I knew them and could have feelings one way or the other toward them. Overall, I recommend this book.

But the narration was dreadful. I hate to tell the narrators, but people in Nebraska do not have a Wisconsin or North Dakota accent. Every time one of the characters who was allegedly from Nebraska spoke, it came out sounding as if they were from somewhere in Wisconsin or from Fargo. I was waiting for a “you betcha“ any minute. I am not from any of these places, and it was still highly annoying.

Loved this!

Great story. The narrator for the FBI agent sounded like she was sixteen. Other than that, I loved it.

Convoluted

Too many unnecessary characters and side story lines. Couldn’t really get into it bc you never got a chance to really know the main characters… or any characters actually. So I ended up not really liking or caring about anyone. Loved “The Night Shift” by this author though!

Great storyline, terrible accents

Such a great premise, well executed plot line. I honestly loved the performance too, except for the accents. Especially Ganesh and the Escobar lady. So cringey. Other than that, the book and the performance were good!

It’s really a shame what happened to the family. I really hate it how things played out. But this book kept me engaged. I never would’ve thought the ending would be as it was. It was an awesome story line I think the narrator’s were awesome and I highly recommend the book you won’t be disappointed
