About this listen

Daniel and Lori love each other, yet to live as one in 1856, they must escape from the unyielding society that imprisons them. Lori was born a slave in North Carolina, yet by chance was raised alongside Daniel in a wealthy abolitionist household.

The sudden death of Daniel's mother catapults Lori back into bondage. Relegated to chattel on a rice plantation, Lori lives in constant fear under the tormenting scrutiny of Daniel's wretched aunt.

After Daniel fails to convince his relatives to free Lori, he is compelled to devise a daring escape. Although a life-threatening endeavor for both of them, Lori's freedom is priceless to Daniel, and he's willing to pay such a price for her love.

A bit of a Christian soap opera

This was well read but quite corny I will do the others but it didn’t touch me like other books on this topic have done

Twist @ the End

I just finished this book and I’m going to start the second book tonight. The story becomes really engaging after the first two chapters.

A Series of Unexpected Events

I was concerned at first about the voices played by the narrator for each character (dull and lifeless), but then she got more comfortable and gave each character a voice with personality. She did a wonderful job! I was able to follow and the enjoy the book. Now I am waiting to earn my next free point so I can continue with part 2... Masquerade.

Worthy

Great listen. The narration takes you completely into the story. The characters are visible and perhaps people you've encountered at some point in your life

The power of love

The love Daniel shows for Laurie, is a love every woman deserves. He didn't allow anything to keep him from his hearts love.

Excellent!

I enjoyed this book immensely because it is totally believable that these incidents occurred and probably still occurring. I will be reading the 2nd book in this trilogy soon. I thought the narrator was very good as well. Well done!

Over Done

Would you try another book from Maria McKenzie and/or Madison Vaughn?

No. I feel this book over describes or repeats character details and is to "preachy."

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

Most interesting is the method of escape from the plantation. Least interesting is the repetitive descriptions of the characters anxieties.

What does Madison Vaughn bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The personality of the characters is expressed well by the performance

Was Escape worth the listening time?

If I had not been in the car for several hours I would not have finished the book. At home I definitely would have returned it to Audible within the first 3 hours of listening.

Any additional comments?

The storyline is interesting and I stuck with with the book by fast forwarding many times. I would not waste my time or money on the next two books in the trilogy.
