Publisher's summary

Instant #1 New York Times Bestseller!

The biggest thriller of the year: A history-making eruption is about to destroy the Big Island of Hawaii. But a secret held for decades by the US military is far more terrifying than any volcano.

“The book is a classic summer beach read...Eruption will revive the art of speed-reading...told with a singular voice that is a compelling amalgam of the two writers.”—USA Today

Eruption is an epic thriller…fast-paced and deeply considered…a cinematic story rooted in science and infused with plenty of heart, tackling big themes like love and loss.”–Time

The master of the techno-blockbuster joins forces with the master of the modern thriller to create the most anticipated mega bestseller in years.

Michael Crichton, creator of Jurassic Park, ER, Twister, and Westworld, had a passion project he’d been pursuing for years, ahead of his untimely passing in 2008. Knowing how special it was, his wife, Sherri Crichton, held back his notes and the partial manuscript until she found the right author to complete it: James Patterson, the world’s most popular storyteller.

“Explosive…the summer’s ultimate literary mashup.”—Washington Post

"Takes readers on a thrilling journey."—BBC

"Beachbag-ready."—Boston Globe

“A seismic publishing event…all the elements of a summer blockbuster…it’s a thrill and the pages practically turn themselves.”—Associated Press

Eruption is this summer’s literary version of a blockbuster action movie.”–Los Angeles Times

"Breakneck and plausible."—Publishers Weekly

Critic reviews

Eruption is this summer’s literary version of a blockbuster action movie.”—Los Angeles Times
“Pulse-pounding … the heartbreaking climax and satisfying style are what listeners have come to expect from these two masters of the genre.”—AudioFile
Eruption is so much more than just a great summer read. It combines the impeccable research and scientific knowledge that Crichton consistently infused into everything he wrote with the breakneck suspense of a James Patterson novel… A wild ride that takes no prisoners.”—Bookreporter

WOW!

This was an amazing project collaboration by awesome writers! Michael Chriton and James Patterson are amazing writers on their own but this collaboration boggles the mind. It was seamlessly executed that you can’t tell which writer wrote what part of the book. The narrator was also excellent in describing the book!

I sincerely hope that Mrs Chriton consider reviewing more of her husband’s outlines and projects in the hope of finding another gem like this book! I loved it!

Technical aspects

Dislike: audio was way overdramatized. Not everyone speaks breathlessly in every sentence. I don’t think if I read the book, it would seem like that, but the audio was very very drippy.

Pathetic Patterson

Leave it to James Patterson to absolutely ruin what could have been a good Michael Crichton story.

What a great story if you love volcano stories there is a bit of Dante’s Peak & Volcano in there, hold onto your seats its the ride of your life with a darker edge than the eruption. narration was great.

the story was very good

however I was waiting for Jack Reacher pop up in the story somewhere. the scary thing is I wouldn't put it pass the military to do something stupid like that.

the bad ending

The reader was over the top, the story was a formula driven thriller. the same characters as in others like this. I kept hanging on because I wanted it to have some kind of twist out sometime... the writers definitely weren't afraid of killing characters off. it was build up.... build up.... build up.... and then... ya ya ya.... then nothing. All mopped up in a nice tight little bow... whatever

Poor narration

Good storyline, but I had trouble listening to the narrator. Ruined it for me. Everyone sounded either like they were about to cry or blow their top. The women were especially desperate and fragile sounding. This detracted from the story line, made it harder to follow. Its better to let the story tell itself. No need to embellish.

best in the beginning

if I was really familiar with every nook and cranny of the island this might have been more interesting..just kind of meandered from one landmark to another and had a weak ending 😔
