La Rusia poscomunista y el particular régimen del presidente Putin, su nacionalismo, su crítico desdén y desconfianza hacia Occidente y su cínico escepticismo hacia los valores reclamados como «occidentales», así como el considerable consenso que todo ello tiene en la sociedad rusa, no se comprenden sin atender a los años noventa, a la forma y los motivos que llevaron a la autodisolución de la URSS por sus propios dirigentes, y al rasgo central que esa década imprimió en la conciencia social y nacional de los rusos: la humillación.
Aquel periodo no sólo supuso una gran y traumática depresión para millones de rusos, sino que ofreció también el medio ambiente idóneo para la reconversión social de una casta administrativa en clase propietaria. Una vez realizada esa crucial operación, en las elites rusas se planteó de nuevo la cuestión del Estado: recuperar su maltrecha función y restablecer su prestigio, tanto dentro como fuera del país.
Vladimir Putin, que, si concluye su actual mandato, habrá gobernado Rusia tanto tiempo como Stalin o Brezhnev, fue el encargado de esa restauración porque reunía tres características idóneas: era una persona «de orden» leal y obediente, no corrupta, con sentido de Estado y, al mismo tiempo, desengañado de las ideologías del antiguo régimen soviético y desmarcado de cualquier tentación de poner en cuestión la turbia privatización que acabó con la nivelación soviética y convirtió a Rusia en una sociedad de grandes desigualdades.
Pero todos estos sorprendentes vaivenes de la Rusia a caballo entre dos siglos se insertan también sobre un entramado histórico concreto, una impronta secular que explica no pocas inercias y regresos al régimen autocrático tradicional en Rusia desde su misma fundación como Estado.
Este libro aborda todos esos aspectos y es, de alguna forma, un epílogo y un regreso a la gran crónica que el autor realizó hace quince años sobre el fin de la URSS y el nacimiento de la Rusia poscomunista, La Gran Transición (Rusia 1985-2002), que Manuel Vázquez Montalbán consideró la mejor síntesis de aquel turbulento periodo.
