Publisher's summary
Angie Sage, New York Times best-selling author of the Septimus Heap series, crafts a fantasy world where enchantment is illegal, Oracles knit octopuses, wizards run around in soggy underpants, and one girl is on a mission to save Enchantment and Enchanters, which might just save the kingdom.
Alex has a set of Enchanted cards. When she flutters her fingers above them, something magical happens: The cards come alive and create moving pictures of what is now and what is yet to come. But Enchantment is illegal in the city of Luma, and those who practice it are imprisoned forever in the Vaults - dark dungeons deep below the city.
When Alex is betrayed by her foster sister Zerra, she knows she is in great danger. With the help of her little foster brother, Louie, she makes a daring escape.
But Alex discovers she is not safe outside Luma either. Here lurk deadly Hauntings that seek out those who practice magic: Enchanters and their children. The Hauntings take many forms, and Alex is hunted by a giant bird of prey, the Hawke, a murderous Night Wraith called the Grey Walker, and the eerie Xin.
But why do the Hauntings haunt Alex?
Alex doesn’t believe she’s an Enchanter’s Child, but she has no idea who her parents are. Her precious Enchanted cards are her only clue to her true identity, and she becomes determined to find out who she is. And, while she is at it, to get rid of the deadly Twilight Hauntings forever.
Praise for Angie Sage's Twilight Hauntings:
"Intricate worldbuilding, richly evocative settings, nuanced characters, deftly woven plotting, and wry humor. An unmitigated delight." (Kirkus Reviews starred review)
"Fans of fantasy and adventure will snap this up and eagerly await the sequel." (School Library Journal starred review)
"Sage deftly crafts an endearing and familiar fantasy story, expertly characterizing distinct, extreme personalities. Fantasy fans will highly anticipate the next steps in Alex’s journey in the projected sequel of the Enchanter’s Child duology." (Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books)

Katarina Ashowan was not made for courtly life. Sure, her father is the famous house witch of Daxaria so she was raised among majestic castles, proper manners, and royal expectations. But Kat is also a mutated witch whose power aligns predominantly with fire. She’s more comfortable riding horses or learning to fight than she is making polite conversation and wearing fancy dresses. Which is why her upcoming assignment—serving her best friend, Alina, the soon-to-be crowned Troivackian queen—is anything but ideal.

In the world’s most magical metropolis where spirits run noodle shops and cash-strapped dragons stage photo-ops for tourists, people still think fairies are nothing but stories, and that’s exactly how the fairies like it. It’s a lot easier to feast on humanity’s dreams when no one believes you exist. But while this arrangement works splendidly for most fair folk, Lola isn’t one of the lucky ones.

Reports to write, forms to fill, coffee to drink, leads to run down. Gus’s life was a tedium and boredom he’d grown comfortable with. One that he sought out after he’d come back from his tour of duty. A detective in the paranormal investigations department. A job he could work day in and day out in relative peace. One cold and forgotten cup of coffee at a time. It was an environment that made some sense to him. At least in comparison to civilian life where almost nothing did. On top of that, it gave him a chance to hide what he was from the rest of the world.

A great listen
Sage again does not fail to entertain. This comedy isn’t quite as dramatic as most of her other works, but I did chuckle about these silly people. It was not a howler or a page turner, but in a typical fantasy universe of orphans and unwanted children readers may feel some degree of sympathy. For me, a test of a good book is did I enjoy it the second time (I did), and not because I had to listen again to figure out what was going on.

Lots of action, has promise
I love Angie Sage. But nothing post-Septimus Heap has come close to be as amazing as that is, to me. I think my biggest mistake (but how would I have known?) is that I listened to this book, and I didn't gel with the narrator. A paper copy could have been better. It was hard to follow the changes in point of view, and it was pretty much non stop action. That left me a bit impatient and dissatisfied. I didn't get as much wonderful world-building as some describe. I never felt attached to any of the characters. I bought both volumes of this two part series in Audible, but I see the second is narrated by someone else, so I will give it a try.

Too hard to listen to
Not sure if it's the relentless tone of what sounds like indignance that she uses throughout or if it's her cadence, but Fiona Hardingham's speaking style is a complete distraction and imposes itself in front of what is likely to be another good story from Angie Sage, forcing me to turn off the narration after short intervals.
I see the second book has a different narrator, but that doesn't help me if I can't get through the first book to learn how this strange world works and to meet all of Sage's characters. What a waste!
Please re-record this first book with a different narrator!
