Elspeth Awbrey, formerly Bennet, is the sister of Mr Bennet and the guardian of traditions inherited from their Scottish ancestor, Elspeth MacLellan.

Married to Oliver Bennet, the man who imposed the infamous entail on Longbourn, Elspeth MacLellan insisted that all their descendants, whether male or female, must fulfil a covenant to ensure the welfare and happiness of their family. Under the sign of Cailleach, one of Scotland’s most significant pagan deities, this covenant seeks to mitigate the terrible impact of the entail on Oliver Bennet’s heirs.

Elizabeth is bound to uphold this tradition, a responsibility that weighs heavily upon her, and despite accepting Mr Darcy’s marriage proposal at Rosings, she is on the brink of not marrying him because she struggles to fulfil her covenant.
