Dr. Hans Himmelheber besuchte die heutige Côte d'Ivoire 1933 zum ersten Mal. Er war zu Gast bei Häuptlingen der Baule, beeindruckt von den alten Leviten, die abends die Märchen vortrugen, von den Holzschnitzern und Dichtern eines echten Künstlervolkes. 1935 bereicherte Himmelheber seine Aufzeichnungen während einer weiteren Forschungsreise zu den Baule durch wertvolle Tondokumente ihrer Gesänge und Perkussionsspiele, die uns freundlicher Weise von der Musikethnologischen Abteilung der Staatlichen Museen Berlin zur Verfügung gestellt wurden.
