El personaje central que es la condesa Diana de Belflor, mueve todos los hilos de la acción que tiene lugar entre continuos enredos, engaños y conflictos amorosos que reflejan unas inquietudes sexuales de los protagonistas, que van en contra de las convenciones sociales, la posición y el decoro.
La condesa se debate entre el amor que siente hacia su secretario Teodoro y las convenciones sociales, que le impiden casarse con él. Pero a su vez la condesa tampoco acepta que Teodoro se case con la criada Marcela por considerarla socialmente inferior a él. Como dice el famoso refrán...el perro del hortelano ni come ni deja comer.
