En este estudio del alma humana y lo que la distorsiona, Arno Gruen describe el origen del odio y de la violencia en las personas y sociedades. Contradiciendo a su predecesor Freud, Gruen argumenta que el odio y la violencia no son tendencias innatas del ser humano, sino que se originan en el odio a uno mismo que se desarrolla en la infancia.
¿Qué sucede cuando un niño aprende que solo va a obtener el amor que tanto desea de sus padres cuando se someta a sus deseos? Al elegir el "amor" por sobre la autonomía del yo, se lleva a cabo un proceso de auto traición que no solo nos deshumaniza, pero que también influye de manera profunda y duradera en nuestra formación y en el desarrollo de la personalidad.
Este proceso de auto traición ha impregnado a las sociedades contemporáneas de la humanidad. Gruen estudia este patrón de adaptación y rebeldía a lo largo de diversos fenómenos psicológicos y sociológicos, en particular su trágica manifestación histórica en el nazismo.

Arno Gruen (1923-2015), es un psicólogo y profesor austriaco-aleman que en 1936 emigro a los Estados Unidos junto con su familia para escapar de los horrores de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. En EE. UU., Gruen estudió psicología en la City College of New York, y después obtuvo un posgrado en psicología en la Universidad de Nueva York (NYU) al estudiar el psicoanálisis con Theodore Reik. Igualmente, Gruen fue un famoso profesor de psicología, y trabajó más de 17 años como docente en Rutgers University. En 1979 Gruen se mudó a Suiza, país donde falleció en 2015.
Sus obras fueron publicadas en alemán, y vendieron millones de ejemplares. Gruen es autor de 14 ensayos y varios artículos sobre psicología, y su obra más reconocida es "El extraño que llevamos dentro", la cual fue galardoneada con el premio Geschwister-Scholl-Preis en 2001.
